The CSR Journal Magazine

Iran has officially invited Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party and former Union minister, to participate in the ceremonies related to the funeral of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The specifics of whether Naqvi will attend the functions have yet to be confirmed.

Naqvi has acknowledged the receipt of the invitation but has not disclosed whether he will attend in a personal capacity or as a representative of his political party. The news agency PTI reported this development, highlighting the significance of the event and potential diplomatic implications.

India is expected to have representation at the ceremonies from Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita as well as Bihar Governor Ata Hasnain, indicating that the event carries weight in the context of India-Iran relations.

Details of the Funeral Ceremonies

The formal invitation sent to Naqvi by Mohsen Qummi, director of international relations in the office of Iran’s supreme leader, expressed deep sorrow at the death of Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, who passed away on February 28, 2026. The director referred to Khamenei’s death as “martyrdom” and emphasised the significant loss for the nation.

In the invitation, Qummi stated that a state funeral ceremony would occur in Tehran, adhering to a national period of mourning and the protocols established by the Islamic Republic. This reflects the nation’s traditional customs in honouring its leaders.

According to the details provided in the invitation, public farewell ceremonies will take place at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla Complex on Friday. Additionally, a commemorative session dedicated to Khamenei’s legacy is scheduled for July 4 at the Summit Conference Hall in Tehran, followed by a funeral procession on July 6.

Context of Khamenei’s Death

Khamenei, who led Iran for over three decades, was reported to have died during significant military action, specifically on February 28, the first day of extensive air strikes conducted by the United States and Israel targeting Tehran. This event has heightened international attention towards the leadership transition in Iran and its implications.

In a gesture of condolence and diplomatic respect, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had extended an invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Invitations have also reached other significant Indian political figures like Naqvi, underscoring the importance of bilateral relations between Iran and India, especially during a time of national mourning.

This complex scenario unfolds within a broader international landscape, revealing the intricate ties between the two nations. As the situation develops, Naqvi’s decision on whether to attend could influence India’s diplomatic posture towards Iran in the future.
