Food safety officials have raised alarms over unsanitary conditions found at a Zepto warehouse, managed by Nippon Express, in Hoskote, Bengaluru Rural. This revelation came during an inspection conducted on Tuesday, which underscores concerns regarding the storage and handling of food products at the facility. Visual evidence from the site depicted food packets scattered across the floor and cans of beverages and dairy products improperly stored, alongside a significant accumulation of garbage.

The inspection forms part of an intensified food safety initiative spearheaded by Karnataka’s Food Safety and Drug Administration Department. This effort has led to an increase in checks across various food establishments, including hotels and restaurants throughout Bengaluru.

Multiple Indira Canteen Kitchens Under Scrutiny

On the same day as the Zepto inspection, a special drive targeted three Indira Canteen kitchens located in the Bengaluru Urban district. The kitchens inspected were situated in Gottigere, Lingarajapuram, and Singasandra. Health and Family Welfare Minister UT Khader oversaw this operation, focusing on evaluating food quality, storage practices, labelling, and overall food handling within these units.

Officials noted several violations during the inspections, such as improper labelling, misbranding, and unhygienic conditions related to food handling. Consequently, notices were issued to the operators of all three establishments, with recommendations to pursue legal action through appropriate channels. In particular, the Indira Canteen warehouse at Gottigere was sealed due to its inadequate food handling and storage practices.

Samples of various food items, including pulses, turmeric powder, cooking oil, jaggery, salt, sugar, and other prepared items, were collected for quality testing. These samples are being sent to laboratories to ensure compliance with established food safety standards.

Wider Safety Enforcement Across Bengaluru

The recent inspections are part of a broader enforcement strategy aimed at enhancing food safety throughout Bengaluru Urban district and Greater Bengaluru Area. This initiative has led to a thorough review of numerous three-star and five-star hotels, alongside other food service establishments.

In these latest efforts, a total of sixty establishments were inspected, resulting in the collection of seventy-seven food samples which will undergo analysis at designated food laboratories. This rigorous approach aims to ensure adherence to the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011.

Officials have indicated that stringent legal measures will be initiated against any food business operators found to be in violation of these safety regulations. The department plans to continue with special inspection drives to guarantee that the public enjoys safe, hygienic, and high-quality food options.
