The Telangana BJP chief spokesperson, NV Subhash, has issued a rebuttal to AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi regarding his remarks on the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. Subhash asserted that those who disagree with the decision are unable to accept the current peace and development in the region. He accused certain leaders of losing their credibility and power following the changes in the Union Territory.

Subhash stated, “Today, everyone is happy except Asaduddin Owaisi, Mehbooba Mufti, and other leaders because they have lost their credibility and power. They are unable to digest the peace and prosperity in Jammu and Kashmir.” He alleged that some political figures crave power for themselves and their families, expressing discontent with the status quo in the region.

Owaisi Criticises the Abrogation and Calls for Statehood

Asaduddin Owaisi, while speaking in Delhi, voiced strong opposition to the abrogation of Article 370. He claimed that militant activities have persisted in Jammu and Kashmir and questioned the government’s failure to restore statehood, despite prior assurances. Owaisi remarked that the Supreme Court’s ruling, though respected, did not rectify what he perceived as an unconstitutional removal of Article 370.

Owaisi stated, “Militant activities are still taking place there. While the Supreme Court has delivered its verdict and we respect the Court, I personally believe the decision was flawed because Article 370 was removed in an unconstitutional manner.” He highlighted the inconsistency in the government’s promises to restore statehood, questioning, “If so many years have passed, why has statehood not been restored?”

Protests by Mehbooba Mufti and the PDP

On the same day, Mehbooba Mufti, the president of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), conducted a protest in Srinagar. She reaffirmed her party’s commitment to advocating for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, as well as the release of political prisoners. Mufti emphasized that the PDP would continue to fight for these issues in conjunction with resolving the broader Kashmir situation.

Mufti expressed to reporters, “The PDP, our community, we will fight. Along with resolving the Kashmir issue, we will also address Articles 370 and 35A and the release of prisoners languishing in various jails across the country.” She stressed that Article 370 is essential for preserving the rights and identity of the region’s populace and protects local land and employment rights.

Additionally, Mufti challenged the government’s assertion that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir had improved, urging for the withdrawal of military forces from civilian areas and their re-establishment at camps. She highlighted significant suffering on both sides of the Line of Control, referring to recent violent incidents that included the killing of labourers. Mufti stated, “Kashmiris are suffering on both sides,” indicating the ongoing challenges faced by the residents.

Background on Article 370 Revocation

Article 370 and Article 35A were revoked by the Indian government on August 5, 2019, effectively ending the special status conferred to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. Following this move, the region was reorganised into two Union Territories, Jammu and Kashmir, which has a legislature, and Ladakh, which does not. This significant change has since sparked ongoing debates and protests regarding the political future and governance of the region.
