Iran Detains Over 3,000 Citizens Over Alleged Ties to Israel

The CSR Journal Magazine

Iran’s judiciary on Monday said more than 3,000 people had been arrested in recent months on allegations of collaborating with what authorities described as “the enemy”, with hundreds accused of carrying out activities on behalf of Israel.

The announcement comes amid an intensified crackdown by Tehran following anti-government protests and the conflict involving joint US-Israeli strikes. Human rights organisations have accused Iranian authorities of using mass arrests and politically motivated prosecutions to suppress dissent.

Judiciary Details Arrest Figures

Judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangir told Tehran’s semi-official Student News Network (SNN) that 3,292 people had been detained in recent months.

According to Jahangir, 684 of those arrested were accused of carrying out “operational actions” for Israel.

He said another 1,258 individuals had been charged with spreading political propaganda against the state.

Jahangir added that authorities had issued 1,061 indictments in connection with the cases and had confiscated the assets of hundreds of people whom the state considers suspected traitors.

Property Seizures and Earlier Crackdown

The latest figures follow a series of arrests, prosecutions and asset seizures reported in recent months.

Last week, the judiciary announced that it had taken control of the properties of 100 individuals described as “traitors” in Isfahan province, according to a report by The New York Post.

No additional details regarding those cases were made public.

The recent arrests come after more than 50,000 people were detained following anti-regime protests in January, which were followed by a violent crackdown.

Since then, Iranian authorities have pursued individuals accused of aiding US-Israeli air strikes during the height of the conflict.

At the time, a provincial branch of the Revolutionary Guards’ intelligence organisation said, “As the Zionist enemy (Israel) and the US are attempting to invade Iran, they simultaneously activate mercenaries and spies to carry out riots as the next step.”

Human Rights Groups Criticise Tehran

Human rights organisations have alleged that the Iranian government has used arbitrary arrests and forced confessions to silence critics.

Amnesty International said last month that Iran was “using the cover of what they call ‘wartime conditions’ to intensify their repression of dissent through mass arbitrary arrests, accelerated grossly unfair judicial proceedings, politically motivated executions, harsh prison sentences, and asset confiscations.”

According to the Norway-based Iran Human Rights Group, at least 40 prisoners had been executed by hanging on politically motivated charges since the beginning of the year up to June 8.

The organisation said those executed included 19 protesters.

The figures released by the judiciary on Monday add to a broader picture of arrests, indictments and property seizures that have intensified in recent months.

The allegations and figures released by Iranian authorities could not be independently verified.

Published reports indicate that concerns over due process and human rights continue to draw international scrutiny as the crackdown unfolds.
