Yemen Strikes Sanaa Airport to Prevent Iranian Plane from Landing

The CSR Journal Magazine

The internationally recognised government of Yemen announced on July 13, 2026, that it conducted airstrikes targeting the runway at Sanaa International Airport. This action aimed to intercept an Iranian aircraft reportedly en route to Yemen. The situation marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict within the country, which continues to be heavily influenced by regional tensions involving Iran and allied factions.

The Yemeni Defence Minister confirmed that the military specifically aimed at the runway to prevent the aircraft’s landing. Despite these efforts, sources indicate that the Iranian plane successfully diverted and landed in Hodeidah, another city under Houthi control located along the Red Sea.

Houthis Accuse Saudi Arabia of Aggression

The internationally recognised government operates from Aden and enjoys the backing of Saudi Arabia and various Gulf countries. Although the government has refrained from directly implicating Riyadh in the airstrikes, the tensions between the factions continue to escalate amid ongoing conflict.

Earlier in the day, Yemen’s Defence minister indicated that diplomatic channels had been exhausted in addressing Iran’s alleged continuous violations of Yemeni airspace. He stated that both Tehran and the Houthis had disregarded mediation attempts and warned that any unauthorised aircraft entering Yemen’s airspace would be confronted with “all available means.” The minister further declared Iran accountable for the rising tensions.
