IPL: Cummins and Hussain Shine as SRH Limits CSK to 180 in Chennai

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a vital Indian Premier League match held on May 18 in Chennai, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) showcased an impressive bowling performance, successfully limiting Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to a total of 180 runs for the loss of seven wickets. Led by captain Pat Cummins, the SRH bowling unit experienced significant contributions from Sakib Hussain and Eshan Malinga, solidifying their team’s position in the tournament.

Chennai Super Kings Batting Performance

After winning the toss and electing to bat, CSK commenced their innings with openers Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad. The duo started aggressively, managing to score 17 runs in the opening over, which marked CSK’s second-highest score in first overs of their IPL innings, behind the 19 runs achieved against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2015. Samson, in particular, set a vigorous pace, striking a six off Nitish Reddy and following it up with three consecutive fours against Praful Hinge in the next over.

Cummins Leads SRH Attack

However, it was Pat Cummins who made the initial breakthrough, dismissing Samson for 27 in his first over, and introducing Urvil Patel to the crease. Patel quickly hit Cummins for two sixes, indicating a continuation of CSK’s aggressive strategy. Nevertheless, Eshan Malinga’s efficient spell stifled CSK’s scoring, allowing only three runs in his over. The pressure mounted as Sakib Hussain managed to dismiss Patel for 13, leaving CSK at 57 for 2 at the end of the powerplay, reflecting a strong comeback from SRH after a brisk start from CSK.

Key Wickets and CSK Inning Dynamics

In the eighth over, Kartik Sharma found his rhythm while facing Hinge, scoring 16 runs in that over. Yet, Pat Cummins responded promptly, claiming Sharma’s wicket for a solid 32 runs shortly thereafter. Subsequently, Cummins took the crucial wicket of Ruturaj Gaikwad, who struggled throughout his innings, scoring only 15 runs off 21 balls without hitting a boundary. This marked the longest stretch without a boundary for an opener in the 2026 season.

Partnerships and Late Wickets

With Gaikwad’s departure, Shivam Dube joined Dewald Brevis in an attempt to stabilize the innings. Brevis struck boundaries at regular intervals while Dube provided support from the other end. The pair guided CSK to a total of 132 for 4 after 15 overs, though their progress was curtailed when Eshan Malinga dismissed Brevis for 44. Following this, Hussain picked up Dube for 26, as Akeal Hosein entered the crease in the penultimate over.

Final Overs and CSK’s Total

In a commendable final over, Praful Hinge kept the CSK batting in check, conceding only eight runs while claiming the wicket of Prashant Veer. As a result, CSK concluded their innings with a total of 180 runs for 7 wickets, a score that showcased the efficient bowling strategy employed by Sunrisers Hyderabad throughout the match.
