Instagram Tests New Controls To Let Users Personalise Their Feed

Instagram is developing new tools that would allow users to customise content recommendations more easily, as the platform seeks to give people greater control over the posts and videos surfaced by its algorithm.

The proposed changes build on Instagram’s “Your Algorithm” feature, introduced in 2025, which enables users to influence the type of content recommended to them. The company now plans to make those controls more accessible by integrating them directly into everyday browsing.

New Features Could Bring Algorithm Controls To The Feed

Instagram head Adam Mosseri recently shared a preview of several concepts the company is exploring to make recommendation controls more visible and easier to use.

“We’re working on making Your Algorithm feel more present and useful across Instagram. I wanted to share a few ideas we’re exploring,” Mosseri said in a post on Instagram.

One concept would allow users to pull down on the home feed to access a dedicated “Your Algorithm” menu without navigating through settings.

Another idea would let users swipe up from a Reel to quickly adjust the type of content they want recommended next.

Instagram is also testing controls beneath Reels that would enable users to indicate whether they want to see more or fewer videos of a similar type.

Explaining the objective behind the changes, Mosseri said: “The idea is easy access right from the home screen. Ideally, you can tune it in real time.”

Features Still In Development

Instagram emphasised that the concepts shown remain under development and may not all become permanent features.

“Some of this is testing now, some is coming soon, some might not work. Let me know what you think,” Mosseri added.

The company has not announced a timeline for a wider rollout and said testing is still ongoing.

Users Have Long Requested More Control

The proposed update comes amid growing calls from users who say Instagram’s recommendations often prioritise suggested content over posts from accounts they actively follow.

One of the most-liked responses to Mosseri’s announcement reflected a frequent complaint among users.

“WE JUST WANT OUR ALGORITHM TO SHOW THE PPL WE FOLLOW,” the comment read.

Many users have argued that their feeds increasingly feature recommended Reels and posts from unfamiliar creators rather than updates from friends, family members and followed accounts.

Instagram’s latest initiative appears aimed at addressing those concerns by making recommendation controls available directly within the browsing experience.

Part Of A Broader Push To Respond To User Feedback

The algorithm changes are the latest in a series of updates introduced by Instagram in response to user requests.

The platform recently launched a feature allowing users to add individual captions to photos within carousel posts.

Previously, all images in a carousel shared a single caption, limiting users’ ability to provide context for each photo.

With the new option, users can assign separate captions to individual images through a toggle during the post creation process.

Instagram says the feature is optional but provides creators and everyday users with greater flexibility when sharing stories, information and visual content across multiple images.

The latest algorithm controls indicate that Instagram is continuing efforts to give users more influence over how content is presented, while balancing personalised recommendations with individual preferences.
