Elon Musk Terminates Revenue Programme for X Users, Last Payment Scheduled for September 11

The CSR Journal Magazine

X, formerly known as Twitter, is set to discontinue its revenue sharing programme, with the final payments for eligible users scheduled for September 11. This significant change was communicated via an article on the platform, which highlighted that new registrations for the programme ceased on August 7. The revenue sharing initiative previously allowed users to earn money based on engagement with their posts, although it was exclusive to premium account holders.

The move to end the programme follows the recent announcement from X’s product head, Nikita Bier, who has decided to step down, but he will continue his association with the platform in an advisory role.

Reasons Behind Discontinuation of Revenue Sharing

Allegra Jacchia, the head of creators at X, indicated that the decision to shut down the revenue sharing programme stemmed from perceived misalignments in its incentives. She noted that instead of fostering original content creation, the programme inadvertently encouraged users to duplicate existing content in order to secure payment. To address this issue, X is launching a new rewards programme dedicated to original content.

Jacchia explained that while adjustments could have been made to the existing rules, a fresh start would be more beneficial in crafting a programme specifically aimed at rewarding originality. According to X, the previous initiative had not sufficiently motivated creators to produce unique content. Currently, only users enrolled in the former revenue sharing scheme may participate in the new programme.

Prior to its termination, X has outlined that three final payouts will be processed under the current revenue sharing model. Users will receive their last payments on August 14 and August 28, with the last earnings for the programme expected to be disbursed on or about September 11.

Details of the New Original Content Programme

The newly introduced original content rewards programme is designed to incentivise creators who contribute fresh ideas and perspectives to the platform. This initiative aims to reward individuals who produce new and creative material, rather than merely sharing minimal effort content. Under the new structure, creators meeting set criteria will earn money based on the qualified impressions their original posts generate.

Payouts within this programme will occur bi-weekly, contingent upon accounts and content fulfilling specific requirements. X has clarified what constitutes original content, emphasising that it should be material that genuinely reflects the creator’s unique voice, insights, or creativity. Examples of qualifying content include threads, videos, original reporting, memes, and creative illustrations.

To participate in the rewards programme, candidates must be at least 18 years old and reside in a country where the programme is available. Applicants need to maintain either a Personal or Business account, subscribe to a premium plan, and possess a minimum of 500 verified followers, along with achieving at least 500,000 impressions on the Home Timeline from verified users within the preceding 90 days, not counting replies. It is also required that they consistently post original content.

Applications for the new programme can be submitted through Creator Studio, with applicants receiving feedback within three business days. If an application is declined, individuals may submit one appeal. Should that be unsuccessful, reapplication is permitted after 90 days, provided that all criteria are still satisfied. The inaugural payout under this initiative is scheduled for August 28, while new creators who become eligible on or after September 8 will receive their first payment on September 25.
