A 25-year-old man’s life was preserved following swift action from Meerut Police, who responded to a suicide alert prompted by a post on Instagram. Officials stated that the police arrived at his location within eight minutes, ensuring he received urgent medical attention after being assessed in a critical condition.

This incident highlights the collaboration between the Uttar Pradesh Police and Meta, which has implemented a system for identifying posts that suggest potential self-harm. Alerts regarding such posts are sent directly to law enforcement for immediate action.

The youth, who resides in the Sardhana area of Meerut, uploaded a video on Instagram. The footage showed him consuming a white liquid, accompanied by a caption that read, “Ab tum khush rehna apni life mein” (Now you stay happy in your life).

Coordination With Meta and Police Action

The alert was dispatched to the Social Media Centre at the police headquarters at 6.53 pm after Meta identified the concerning content. Following protocols set by the Directorate General of Police, details including the individual’s mobile number and location were shared with Meerut Police.

A team under the Senior Superintendent of Police swiftly visited the young man’s residence. Upon arrival, officers found him in critical condition, alongside a bottle containing a suspected harmful substance.

With the assistance of family members, the police quickly transported him to a local hospital, where he received vital treatments. Fortunately, his condition showed improvement following medical intervention.

Support and Guidance for Mental Wellbeing

During subsequent interviews, the individual disclosed that he had been undergoing significant stress and depression stemming from a recent relationship breakup. This personal turmoil allegedly influenced his decision to attempt suicide.

In light of the incident, the police provided counselling services to both the young man and his family, alongside vital guidance for future mental health support. This proactive approach aims to prevent further incidents of self-harm within the community.

The Uttar Pradesh Police highlighted that their partnership with Meta, operational since 2022, has been instrumental in addressing potential suicide cases. From January 1, 2023, to May 31, 2026, interventions based on such alerts have reportedly saved the lives of 3,011 individuals statewide.
