The Bengaluru Cyber Crime Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) regarding an allegedly obscene and defamatory video aimed at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The complaint was lodged by a member of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) Legal Cell after the individual discovered the video on Instagram on July 25, 2026.

According to reports, the video in question was uploaded on July 16 from the account identified as ground.reality_india. It reportedly featured a photograph of Rahul Gandhi accompanied by sexually explicit and derogatory remarks intended to defame him. The caption allegedly asked, “Why is the Opposition party so silent,” further suggesting an intention to insult the Congress leader.

The complaint highlights that several users have also posted abusive comments beneath the video. These comments reportedly included sexually explicit slurs and derogatory language, which were seen as offensive to the dignity of women. The complainant noted that similar inflammatory remarks were made by multiple users on the same post.

Police Action and Investigation

Following the receipt of the complaint, the Cyber Crime Police took action by registering an FIR on July 27. The police have commenced an investigation with the aim of identifying the individuals responsible for both the upload of the video and the posting of objectionable comments.

The case has been filed under Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000, which pertains to the publishing or transmitting of obscene material in electronic form. Additionally, charges have been brought under Section 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, indicating possible legal consequences for those involved.

The complainant has urged the Cyber Crime Police to take necessary legal action against the responsible parties and stressed the importance of accountability in such cases. The ongoing investigation aims to bring clarity and justice in light of the alleged defamatory actions against the political figure.

Legal Ramifications and Public Response

The implications of this FIR could be significant, not only for the individuals responsible for the content but also for the broader discourse on online defamation and cyber harassment. Legal experts have noted that such cases can set important precedents in how similar matters are handled in the digital age.

In the current digital landscape, social media platforms like Instagram often become venues for various forms of expression, but they can also give rise to challenges regarding the dissemination of harmful content. The involvement of law enforcement agencies demonstrates an increasing recognition of the need to address these issues proactively.

The topic has resonated with many users on social media, sparking conversations about the responsibilities of platforms and users alike. The case calls attention to the serious nature of online behaviour, particularly when it undermines the dignity and respect due to public figures and individuals in general.
