India’s Largest Skill Training Institute Opens In PM Modi’s Hometown Vadnagar

The CSR Journal Magazine

India’s largest skill training institution has officially opened in Vadnagar, the birthplace of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Industrial Construction Skills Training Institute (ICSTI) was established by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) in collaboration with the Gujarat government. The facility aims to provide world-class training for individuals seeking careers in construction and industry-related trades.

Training Programmes and Graduates

The institute has already seen two pilot batches graduate, comprising 201 students. Among these graduates, 113 have reportedly secured employment offers related to significant infrastructure projects, including the Ahmedabad-Mumbai Bullet Train and the Ahmedabad Metro Rail project. Participants undergo hands-on training in a simulated industrial environment, allowing them to acquire practical skills relevant to the job market.

Ronak Kadiya, a commerce graduate from Vadnagar, enrolled in a formwork carpentry course and is now actively involved in the Ahmedabad-Mumbai Bullet Train project. He expressed appreciation for the extensive hands-on training, stating that it significantly enhanced his employability. The institute offers various structured programmes that last between 45 and 90 days, depending on the industry requirements.

Courses at the Vadnagar institute cover a broad spectrum of over 20 trades, including advanced construction and manufacturing techniques. The curriculum has been developed following the standards of the UK’s Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), ensuring that the training aligns with global best practices. The individuals trained at ICSTI are categorised into skill levels based on their expertise.

Facility and Support for Trainees

The Vadnagar campus spans 9.3 acres and includes extensive training setups that mimic real work environments. All trainees are required to pay no fees, and they benefit from free lodging and boarding subsidised by L&T. The campus features facilities including residential hostels, dining areas, and recreational amenities such as a gymnasium and meditation spaces.

L&T has emphasised its commitment to providing comprehensive training facilities that meet international benchmarks. Students gain experience through practical training sessions in fully equipped workshops. The institute aims not only to educate but also to provide pathways to employment through its close ties with industry projects.

Open to candidates aged 18 to 35, the institute’s entry requirements vary according to the specific trade. Basic civil trade courses are available for individuals who have completed Class 5, while certain advanced technical programmes require prior ITI certification. This inclusive approach aims to equip a wide array of young individuals with the necessary skills to thrive in competitive job markets.

Alignment with National Initiatives

The establishment of ICSTI in Vadnagar supports the Skill India Mission initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which seeks to train millions in relevant industry skills. The Gujarat government is actively working to expand skill development opportunities in the state, ensuring that youth harness beneficial industrial partnerships.

The facility also plays a crucial role in the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS), offering a structured apprenticeship of 24 months followed by nine months of additional training. Upon completion of this programme, candidates are positioned for Front Line Supervisor roles and may receive international placement opportunities.

The Vadnagar institute’s swift construction within six months is a testament to the government’s dedication to enhancing skill training infrastructure. Officially inaugurated on September 17, 2025, the institute aims to serve as a model for future educational and vocational training developments across the nation.
