The Indian-flagged crude oil tanker Desh Garima has reportedly traversed the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime corridor, on April 18. This movement was confirmed by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and marks a significant achievement given the current volatility in the region. The vessel is carrying a crew of 31 Indian seafarers and is anticipated to reach Mumbai on April 22.

The successful navigation of Desh Garima occurs amidst heightened tensions in the vicinity. This tanker represents the tenth Indian vessel to complete this route since early March, highlighting both strategic efforts and challenges faced by Indian shipping in the area.

Recent Incidents Involving Indian Vessels

Despite the safe passage of Desh Garima, two other Indian-flagged vessels encountered hostile situations. The supertanker VLCC Samnar Herad and the Bulk Carrier Jag Arnav reportedly came under fire while trying to transit the Strait on the same day. Following these incidents, both vessels had to reverse course and retreat to the safety of the Persian Gulf.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among the crew members of the targeted vessels. The regional security environment remains under close watch, with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways emphasising the precarious nature of navigation in the Persian Gulf.

This alarming escalation prompted an immediate diplomatic response from India. The Foreign Secretary convened with the Ambassador of Iran to express India’s considerable concern regarding the safety of merchant shipping in the region and to advocate for improved protection measures.

Government Measures to Ensure Safety and Fuel Supplies

In light of the maritime disturbances, the Indian government has assured citizens about the stability of fuel supplies. Reports indicate that domestic refineries are currently operating at full capacity, with sufficient crude inventories in place. Specifically, over 53.5 lakh domestic cylinders were delivered as of April 18, indicating that household consumption is being prioritised over commercial allocations.

In response to the crisis, the Directorate General of Shipping has facilitated the repatriation of 2,538 Indian seafarers since the onset of the regional conflicts, including 51 seafarers in the past 24 hours. This figure underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding its maritime workforce amid ongoing tensions.

A dedicated control room has been operational around the clock since the escalation of the situation, managing nearly 7,000 calls to address various concerns. This proactive response is designed to enhance coordination and support for those affected by maritime disruptions.

International Coordination for Maritime Safety

As Desh Garima approaches Mumbai, the Indian government is maintaining close collaboration with international maritime operations to ensure the smooth and uninterrupted movement of vessels crucial to India’s energy needs.
