Indian Army Rejects Claims of Chinese Encroachment in Arunachal Pradesh

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Army has categorically dismissed media reports that the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has encroached upon areas in Arunachal Pradesh and established military camps within Indian borders. In a declaration made on June 26, 2026, the Army described the allegations as “incorrect and without any basis.” This statement came in direct response to claims that suggested recent PLA activities in the region.

Details of Allegations from Local Organisation

The allegations initially surfaced through an article by the Arunachal Observer, which referenced a letter filed by the NAH Welfare Society (NWS), an organisation based in Taksing. According to the NWS, they communicated with the deputy commissioner of Upper Subansiri, alleging that military infrastructure had been constructed inside Indian territory, particularly in the Taksing circle, an area significant for its strategic location near the India-China border.

In the letter, dated June 26 and signed by NWS president Keru Chader, five locations were identified as allegedly occupied by Chinese forces. These locations are Oying (2445) in Asaphila, Paniar in Chujarta, Marpan (also known as Marnafe), Potrang Lake, and Tindingtang. The NWS contended that these areas have historically belonged to India before 2020 and held substantial cultural significance for local religious practices.

The NWS expressed concerns regarding the gradual loss of territorial integrity over time, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. According to Chader, the increasing activities of the Chinese PLA in the Taksing area posed a significant threat to their land, stating, “We are losing our land inch by inch day by day to them.” This portrayal of the alleged situation underscores a sense of alarm within the local community regarding border security.

Context of India-China Border Relations

The India-China border has been a site of tension for many decades, with both nations maintaining competing claims in various regions. Although the two countries have engaged in diplomatic dialogues to stabilise the situation, incidents of alleged encroachments continue to emerge. This backdrop provides context to the latest allegations made by the NWS and highlights ongoing fears related to territorial integrity.

Despite the dismissal of these claims by the Indian Army, accusations regarding border encroachments frequently surface in the media, reflecting the heightened sensitivity surrounding national security debates. The Army’s firm stance aims to reassure the public and underscore their vigilant measures in monitoring and addressing any potential breaches.

The Indian government’s previous attempts to engage with China regarding border disputes have shown a commitment to maintaining peace and stability, even amid rising tensions. However, local sentiments, as indicated by the concerns raised by the NWS, demonstrate the complexities of public perception in regions directly affected by these geopolitical issues.
