The Indian Army, in collaboration with the Civil Administration in Dras, successfully conducted the Tiger Hill Expedition 2026 on Friday as part of the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorations. The initiative aimed to promote military tourism while preserving the legacy of the Kargil War and highlighting the historical significance of one of India’s most iconic battlefields.

The expedition was the first organised trek to Tiger Hill since Dras became a district headquarters. It brought together civil authorities and the Army in an effort to encourage responsible tourism, showcase the region’s heritage and create opportunities for local communities.

Expedition Highlights Kargil War Legacy

According to an official press note, the expedition offered participants an opportunity to visit Tiger Hill and gain a deeper understanding of the history of the Kargil War while experiencing the region’s natural landscape.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to preserve the memory of the conflict and position Dras as a destination combining history, adventure and cultural heritage.

The press note said trained tour and trek guides from Government Degree College, Dras, assisted during the expedition, describing their participation as a step towards strengthening local capacity, generating sustainable livelihood opportunities and increasing community involvement in the tourism sector.

Army Highlights Civil-Military Collaboration

In a post on X, the Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army said the expedition was organised jointly with the Civil Administration, Dras, as part of the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorations.

The Army said the initiative promoted military tourism while preserving the legacy of the Kargil War and added that trained tour and trek guides from Government Degree College, Dras, participated in the expedition to support sustainable livelihood opportunities for local youth.

The Army described the expedition as an example of effective civil-military collaboration in promoting responsible tourism and showcasing Dras as a destination where history and community engagement converge.

Tribute to Kargil Heroes

The expedition follows a series of initiatives undertaken in the region to honour the sacrifices of soldiers who fought in the 1999 Kargil War.

Last July, ahead of Kargil Vijay Diwas, the Indian Army, in collaboration with the Flag Foundation of India, installed a 72-foot-high national flag at Lamochan in Dras.

The site overlooks several key landmarks of the Kargil battlefield, including Tololing Point, Tiger Hill, Point 5140, Point 4875 and Point 5353, which remains under Pakistani control.

The Tricolour was formally hoisted by Lieutenant General Hitesh Bhalla, General Officer Commanding, 14 Corps, along with Major General (Retd) Asim Kohli, Chief Executive Officer of the Flag Foundation of India, as a tribute to the soldiers who laid down their lives during the Kargil War.
