India Welcomes US-Iran MoU, Doval Says Opening of Strait of Hormuz Will Boost Energy Security

The CSR Journal Magazine

India on Tuesday welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran, with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval expressing “cautious optimism” over the agreement and its potential benefits for energy security, trade and regional stability.

Speaking at the 16th BRICS National Security Advisers’ Meeting, Doval said New Delhi hoped the understanding between Washington and Tehran would succeed and contribute to restoring normalcy in a region that has witnessed prolonged tensions.

Doval Highlights Importance of Strait of Hormuz

Referring to the strategic significance of the agreement, Doval said India viewed the opening of the Strait of Hormuz as a positive development.

“India welcomes the MOU reached between the US and Iran. We have got cautious optimism, and we hope that it will work. It will help energy security. The opening of the Strait of Hormuz is a very welcome development,” he said.

He noted that the agreement could bring greater stability to global energy markets and help address disruptions affecting international commerce.

Relief for Supply Chains and Key Commodities

Doval said smoother movement through the waterway would ease supply chain bottlenecks and improve the availability of essential products.

“It will remove supply chain bottlenecks and many of the shortages in the field of say, fertilisers and chemicals, et cetera, will be met with,” he said.

He also underlined the broader economic benefits arising from secure maritime routes and uninterrupted trade.

“And the freedom of navigation that will be available to the countries in the region and beyond will probably also greatly improve our economic prosperity,” Doval added.

PM Modi Had Earlier Welcomed Peace Efforts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier welcomed the peace negotiations between the United States and Iran and called for the speedy restoration of peace and stability in West Asia.

In a post on X on June 15, the Prime Minister said the conflict had caused widespread economic disruptions and loss of life in several countries.

“I welcome the understanding reached between the United States and Iran on ending the conflict in West Asia, which has caused serious economic disruption across the world and led to loss of life in many countries,” Modi wrote.

“India hopes that the implementation of this understanding will help restore peace and stability in the region and ensure the freedom of navigation and commerce. We look forward to deliberations on the remaining issues reaching a sustainable final agreement,” he added.

Technical Talks Described as Productive

Earlier, US Vice President JD Vance described the latest round of technical discussions held in Switzerland under the 14-point MoU framework as “a very productive 36 hours”.

Vance expressed optimism over the progress made on maritime security, regional stability and oversight of Iran’s nuclear activities.

The understanding between the two countries is aimed at ending hostilities in West Asia and establishing mechanisms to address broader regional issues.
