Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Advisor, recently emphasised that freedom should not be viewed as a blanket right to act without limitations. His comments come in response to recent student protests linked to allegations surrounding the NEET examination paper leak. During these protests, various reports indicated claims of excessive police response, incidents of violence, and injuries to over 200 security personnel.

Speaking in Pune, where he received the Lokmanya Tilak National Award, Doval highlighted the significance of understanding the responsibilities that accompany freedom. His remarks were particularly relevant as the nation reflects on the balance between democratic rights and obligations towards society.

Doval urged the youth to consider the deep sacrifices made during India’s freedom struggle, underscoring that the concept of freedom entails a commitment to the nation and its people. He made a poignant statement about the current generation’s convenience in assuming that India’s current state has always been prevalent.

Acknowledging the Legacy of Bal Gangadhar Tilak

During the ceremony, which coincided with the anniversary of Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s death, Doval called for young Indians to draw inspiration from Tilak’s contributions. He highlighted Tilak’s vision for India and the vital role he played in fostering national consciousness. Doval remarked that every citizen, especially the younger demographic, should contemplate Tilak’s words and the spirit of collective nation-building that he exemplified.

The National Security Advisor noted that the current generation might find it challenging to comprehend the oppressive conditions faced by Tilak under colonial rule. Emphasising historical context, he urged young people to realise the broader implications of their freedoms and their responsibilities towards the country’s development.

Amit Shah, India’s Union Home Minister, presented Doval with the Lokmanya Tilak National Award 2026. This annual accolade, instituted in 1983 by the Tilak Smarak Trust, recognises individuals who have made significant contributions to national progress. In his remarks during the award presentation, Shah praised Doval’s extensive public service career and his influential role in enhancing India’s national security and foreign policy outcomes.

Doval’s Reflections on Being Honoured

Upon receiving the award, Doval expressed humility and reflected on his formative years in Pune, where he first encountered the ideals of Tilak. He noted that he never anticipated being awarded a prize named after such a pivotal figure in India’s history, who embodied courage in the face of adversity.

According to Doval, had Bal Gangadhar Tilak been alive today, he would emphasise the importance of strengthening India’s status as a developed nation. This assertion reflects an ongoing commitment to national growth that they believe is critical in the current era.

In his address, Doval characterised the present moment in India as an “exceptional window of opportunity.” He called on the youth to channel their energies into nation-building initiatives, insisting that personal pursuits should not overshadow collective national interests.

At 81 years old, Doval holds the record as India’s longest-serving National Security Advisor and has had a distinguished career involving significant assignments across various Indian states and abroad. He has also played a crucial role in border negotiations with China.

The award ceremony concluded with a homage to Tilak’s legacy and a renewed call for national unity, as Doval reiterated the importance of addressing both internal and external challenges faced by the country. He entrusted the youth with the responsibility to contribute to building a stronger and more developed India.
