India States Seychelles Projects Will Align with Local Priorities

The CSR Journal Magazine

India affirmed on Sunday that any initiatives it undertakes in Seychelles will prioritise the needs and interests of the host government. This statement was made during a media briefing by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, amid discussions surrounding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing visit to the archipelago. Misri noted that while the specifics of Assumption Island did not come up during the talks, India remains open to discussions if the Seychelles government chooses to address the topic.

The Foreign Secretary stressed that cooperation and development projects between India and Seychelles would be guided chiefly by the priorities determined by the Seychelles authorities. Misri stated, “Any project that we undertake in Seychelles or for that matter any foreign country, is ultimately guided by the priorities and the interests of the host government and the authorities in the host country.” This reflects India’s commitment to partner with nations based on mutual respect and collaboration.

Focus on Development Assistance Without Expectations

Misri also highlighted that India does not seek anything in return for its support to Seychelles. He described the bilateral relationship as being founded on respect, trust, and friendship rather than on transactional terms. He remarked, “These are relationships based on respect, based on trust, and based on friendship.” This assertion underscores a philosophy of international relations that values long-term partnerships over short-term gains.

During the briefing, Misri acknowledged that discussions specifically about Assumption Island had not occurred, but he expressed a willingness to engage if the topic arose. “We have not specifically spoken about this during the ongoing visit, but it is something that we would be open to hearing about should the government officials raise this matter,” he stated, demonstrating India’s readiness to assist in any developmental ideas proposed by Seychelles authorities.

Assumption Island has been a politically sensitive subject in Seychelles for several years, with previous proposals for its development prompting significant political debate. The government of Seychelles is reportedly considering various ideas related to this island, and Misri indicated that India would be pleased to assist if asked.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations Through Friendship

Misri’s emphasis on friendship as a key pillar of the India-Seychelles relationship encapsulates India’s approach to its foreign policy in the region. He explained that if pressed to articulate expectations from Seychelles, he would simply state “friendship.” This approach reflects an intention to cultivate a deeper bond based on mutual respect rather than mere transactional interactions.

As India seeks to navigate its relationships with strategically important nations like Seychelles, the emphasis appears to be on building frameworks that support local governance and the aspirations of the people. Misri’s comments indicate a desire to align Indian developmental efforts with the official objectives of the Seychelles government while ensuring that the local populace’s wishes are also taken into account.

India’s position in the Indian Ocean region, fortified by its historical ties with island nations like Seychelles, continues to evolve. The collaborative spirit shown by both nations could lead to new avenues for cooperation that address key challenges and opportunities, reflecting a mature and sustained diplomatic engagement.
