India Ranks 125th in Global Passport Index as European Nations Dominate

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Global Passport Index (GPI) 2026 has positioned India at 125th among 200 countries, a ranking that assesses not only travel freedom but also investment potential and quality of life within each nation. This index, created by Global Citizen Solutions, provides a more comprehensive evaluation compared to traditional passport rankings. Key factors include mobility, which accounts for fifty per cent of the overall score, followed by investment opportunities and quality of life, each comprising twenty-five per cent.

India’s Ranking and Performance Indicators

India’s performance in the GPI reveals a mixed outlook. The country scores only 135th on the mobility parameter, indicating limited visa-free travel access compared to other nations. Its quality-of-life ranking of 118th suggests that improvements have been made, yet there remains a substantial gap in global standing. This disparity in rankings highlights the constraints faced by Indian passport holders when travelling abroad.

In alignment with the Global Passport Index, the Henley Passport Index has also noted a decline in India’s ranking. As of July 2026, India fell to 80th place, granting visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 56 destinations. Notably, many of these countries are located in Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific, while major destinations such as the United States and the United Kingdom require visas for Indian travellers.

The GPI evaluates passports based on a set of fourteen indicators spread across three main categories, which include enhanced mobility, investment opportunities, and quality of life. This multifaceted approach aims to measure the overall value of a passport beyond mere travel capabilities.

European Dominance in Passport Rankings

The latest edition of the GPI reinforces Europe’s preeminence in passport quality, with nine of the top ten positions occupied by European countries. The top ten passports for 2026 are led by Sweden, followed closely by Switzerland, Finland, and Germany. Notable entries also include Denmark, the Netherlands, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Norway, and Singapore.

Sweden has been recognised as having the strongest passport globally, attributed to its high consistent performance across all three assessment categories. It ranks 11th for mobility, 9th for investment, and 2nd for quality of life, collectively providing the highest overall score among countries. Interestingly, Denmark and the Netherlands share the fifth position, each excelling in different areas: Denmark is particularly noted for its quality of life, while the Netherlands fares better in mobility and investment sectors.

The findings emphasise that in contemporary society, the significance of a passport transcends border crossings. More than just a travel document, a passport can reflect various opportunities for living, working, and investing internationally, thereby influencing an individual’s quality of life and mobility across borders.
