India, Japan Deepen Tech Ties With New Quantum And Healthcare Agreements

The CSR Journal Magazine

India and Japan have fortified their strategic alliance in science and technology through the signing of pivotal agreements focusing on healthcare innovation and emerging technologies. This development occurred during a high-level bilateral meeting held in New Delhi on May 5, 2026. Significant attendees included Kimi Onoda, Japan’s Minister for Science and Technology Policy and Minister of State for Space Policy, and Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology.

The discussions centred on extending collaboration in critical and cutting-edge technologies, culminating in the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) in health and medical devices. This agreement was established between the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED), the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and India’s Department of Science and Technology (DST).

In addition to the MoC, a Letter of Intent (LoI) was also signed, focusing on cooperation in Quantum Science and Technology. This agreement involved India’s DST and Japan’s Cabinet Office, marking an important milestone in fostering cooperation in next-generation technologies, including quantum computing and secure communication systems.

Potential for Joint Innovation and Development

During the meeting, Minister Jitendra Singh remarked on the “natural synergy” existing between India and Japan in the domain of science and technology. He highlighted that Japan’s advanced capabilities, combined with India’s skilled labour force, create substantial opportunities for collaborative innovation. Singh indicated that the partnership had entered a new phase following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Japan in 2025.

Kimi Onoda lauded India’s rapid economic progress and its burgeoning innovation ecosystem, particularly noting the widespread use of artificial intelligence across various sectors. She emphasised Japan’s strengths in advanced manufacturing and quantum technologies, expressing optimism for a deeper collaborative relationship between the two nations.

The discussions also included plans to bolster cooperation under India’s National Quantum Mission. Areas of focus included quantum computing, communication, sensing, and materials research. Both nations explored possibilities for expanding researcher exchange programmes and establishing joint innovation platforms, alongside opportunities for industry internships.

Collaborative Efforts in Healthcare Innovation

In the realm of healthcare, India and Japan made commitments to enhance collaboration through joint research projects, capacity-building initiatives, and support mechanisms aimed at accelerating the development of medical technologies. This signifies a concerted effort to leverage the strengths of both countries in tackling challenges faced in healthcare delivery.

The engagement between the two nations not only seeks to advance technological innovation but also reinforces their shared commitment to fostering science and technology collaboration within a broader vision for a free, open, and innovation-driven Indo-Pacific region. Both parties aim to achieve mutual benefits that align with regional stability and growth.

This significant strengthening of ties illustrates India’s and Japan’s dedication to advancing their collaboration in critical fields, setting a foundation for future partnerships that could yield global benefits in both technology and healthcare sectors.
