India Experiences Varied Weather Conditions on Saturday

The CSR Journal Magazine

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported diverse weather conditions across the country for Saturday, May 2. While the eastern and southern regions are expected to experience heavy rainfall, the northern parts of India will face intense heat. Those planning to venture outdoors should check the weather before stepping out.

Thunderstorms and rainfall are predicted for Kerala, Karnataka, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh as the pre-monsoon activity intensifies along the eastern coastline. This unusual weather is attributed to the influence of multiple weather systems currently active across the country.

A Western Disturbance, which originates from the Mediterranean region, will impact the Himalayan areas from Saturday, adding to the current precipitation events. Another active Western Disturbance is present over Jammu and Kashmir, creating a cyclonic circulation over North Punjab, which will contribute to the varied weather patterns.

Regions Anticipated to Experience Rainfall

On Saturday, several states, including Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and areas in the northeastern part of India, are forecasted to receive moderate to heavy rainfall. This rainfall is expected to provide some relief from the heat experienced in these regions.

Additionally, rainfall and thunderstorms are anticipated in states such as Kerala, Karnataka, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh. Light showers are also likely in parts of West Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan, which may temporarily ease the ongoing warm conditions.

A trough, an extensive region of low atmospheric pressure, is causing pre-monsoon weather activity along the eastern coast by extending from North Odisha to the Gulf of Mannar, passing through Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.

Heatwave Conditions in North India

Northern plains, particularly Delhi and Gurugram, are expected to face scorching temperatures on Saturday, with highs predicted between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius. The hazy skies may further exacerbate the oppressive heat in these areas.

Multiple weather systems, including Western Disturbances and cyclonic circulations, are contributing to the heightened pre-monsoon activity in May. A trough extending from Punjab to southwest Rajasthan is pushing dry and dusty air across northwest India, intensifying the heat in these regions.

While some states had recently observed cooler temperatures, with a drop of three to four degrees Celsius due to previous rainfall, this relief is expected to be temporary. The impending heat is likely to return quickly, impacting residents of the northern plains adversely.

Reasons Behind Erratic Weather Patterns

The current erratic weather across India, ranging from thunderstorms in Jharkhand to heavy rainfall in Odisha and south Kerala, results from various weather systems concurrently interacting. These include Western Disturbances, cyclonic circulations, and wind discontinuities prevalent across peninsular India.

Delhi experienced torrential rain and hail at the end of April, showcasing the unpredictable nature of this year’s weather. As the pre-monsoon season progresses, such dynamic weather events are anticipated to become more frequent and widespread.

Residents in northern India are advised to remain indoors during peak heat hours, specifically between noon and four PM. Conversely, individuals in the eastern and southern regions should carry umbrellas to prepare for any sudden rainfall.
