The discussions between India and the European Union (EU) aimed at enhancing their strategic partnership took place on May 7, 2026. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported that these talks were led by Secretary (West) Sibi George, who met with Maria Castillo Fernandez, the EU Special Envoy for the Indo-Pacific. This meeting was instrumental in reviewing existing bilateral engagements and exploring avenues for increasing cooperation.

During the meeting, both parties discussed various initiatives to deepen India-EU relations. Randhir Jaiswal, the MEA spokesperson, shared details of the encounter on the social media platform X, highlighting the commitment of both sides to fortifying their strategic partnership.

The emphasis during the discussions was placed on not only the political and strategic facets of their relationship but also on various sectors that could benefit from greater collaboration.

Joint Initiative for Electric Vehicle Battery Recycling

On the same day, India and the EU announced a collaborative initiative valued at 15.2 million euros, which is approximately Rs 169 crore, aimed at developing advanced recycling technologies specifically for electric vehicle (EV) batteries. This initiative aligns with both parties’ objectives to strengthen critical mineral supply chains and contribute to a circular economy.

This project was inaugurated under the India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC) Working Group 2, which focuses on Green and Clean Energy Technologies. The announcement regarding this coordinated initiative was released on May 5, 2026, with a submission deadline for proposals set for September 15, 2026.

The initiative reflects the increasing importance that India and the EU place on sustainable technology and shared environmental goals, particularly in the context of electric vehicle development.
