Ram Mandir Trust Considers Appointing CEO Amid Calls for Professional Management

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust in Ayodhya is exploring the possibility of appointing a Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Govind Dev Giri Maharaj, the Trust’s treasurer, emphasised the necessity for a structured approach through professional bureaucratic oversight to ensure proper management of the Trust’s operations. He stated that the lack of a CEO had contributed to recent managerial issues within the organisation.

Govind Dev Giri Maharaj noted the significance of institute discipline in management, stating, “All of this happened due to the absence of a CEO, because the task of oversight requires the discipline that professional bureaucratic people bring.” He went on to explain that a committee has been established to recommend three candidates for the position, from which the Trust will select one individual.

In addressing recent controversies surrounding the Trust, Maharaj reiterated the need for reform and accountability. He described the current governance structure as lacking the necessary professional oversight that a CEO would be expected to provide.

Resignation and Integrity of Key Officials Under Scrutiny

Champat Rai, who recently resigned as the General Secretary of the Trust, has been a focal point of the ongoing discussion regarding the Trust’s management issues. While Govind Maharaj expressed unwavering confidence in Rai’s integrity, he acknowledged instances of carelessness in judgement. The treasurer specifically pointed to Rai’s decision to employ an individual who has now been implicated in serious wrongdoing.

Maharaj explained, “I have known him for 32 years, so I cannot even conceive of him being involved in something like this. However, one has to admit that he was careless regarding his work after all, he employed such a criminal as his driver.” The driver, Ram Yadav, has been arrested in connection with the alleged embezzlement of temple funds.

The Treasurer underscored the necessity of accountability within the Trust, stating that while he maintains that Rai is innocent in terms of personal involvement, the larger issue of oversight remains critical to prevent future misconduct.

Investigation Reveals Allegations of Mismanagement

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) is currently investigating allegations of financial irregularities within the Trust. The preliminary report from the SIT has indicated potential evidence of theft during the donation counting process, which is raising alarms about the Trust’s oversight practices.

According to the report, CCTV footage reviewed by the SIT allegedly captured numerous instances in which counting staff concealed cash. These findings have prompted a thorough examination of the internal procedures, statements from Trust officials, and scrutiny of financial records. Furthermore, the report clarified that certain allegations regarding missing valuable items had not been substantiated.

In the wake of the SIT’s findings, significant reforms within the Trust are being undertaken, including the acceptance of high-profile resignations. Govind Dev Giri Maharaj confirmed that the Trust has initiated measures to enhance accountability and transparency in light of the ongoing situation. Krishna Mohan has been appointed as the interim general secretary as part of these changes.
