India And Slovakia To Hold Regular Consular Talks Amid Rising People-To-People Ties

India and Slovakia on Monday agreed to establish a mechanism for regular consular consultations to facilitate smoother visa procedures, legal migration and better protection for citizens travelling between the two countries.

The decision was announced in the joint statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) following PM Modi’s bilateral talks with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico during his State Visit to Slovakia.

According to the statement, both leaders recognised consular cooperation as an increasingly important area amid the growing movement of students, IT professionals and skilled workers between India and Slovakia.

Dedicated Channel To Strengthen Consular Cooperation

“The leaders noted that cooperation on consular matters remained an area of continued interest to both countries, given the growing movement of people and expanding people-to-people ties,” the joint statement said.

“In this context, they agreed to establish a mechanism for regular consular consultations between their respective consular authorities to facilitate cooperation on consular matters,” it added.

The move is aimed at creating a dedicated channel through which consular authorities from both countries can coordinate directly and address issues related to visas, migration and citizen welfare.

The initiative comes at a time when bilateral exchanges between the two nations are witnessing steady growth.

Labour Mobility And Social Security Agreements Progress

The agreement on consular cooperation complements broader efforts to strengthen mobility between the two countries.

During the visit, India and Slovakia exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding on labour migration, which seeks to facilitate the movement of professionals and skilled workers.

Addressing a joint press interaction, PM Modi said the agreement would help enhance mobility and deepen cooperation between the two countries.

“India and Slovakia are also moving forward in close coordination on the global stage. We agree that all disputes and tensions should be resolved peacefully. Today, we announced an MoU on labour migration to enhance the mobility of professionals and skilled workers between our two countries. We will also soon finalise an MoU on social security,” PM Modi said.

He also extended an invitation to Slovak citizens to visit India and expressed satisfaction over the positive response from the Slovak side.

Technology Emerges As Key Pillar Of Partnership

Highlighting another major outcome of the visit, PM Modi described technology as a key pillar of future India-Slovakia relations.

He said the Memorandum of Understanding on digital technology would open new opportunities for cooperation in digital public infrastructure.

“Technology is a key pillar of our future partnership. The MoU signed today on digital technology will open up new possibilities for cooperation in digital public infrastructure,” he said.

The Prime Minister also welcomed the establishment of an India Chair on Artificial Intelligence at a Slovak university, describing it as an important step in strengthening educational and technological collaboration.

The agreements reached during PM Modi’s visit reflect the growing breadth of India-Slovakia relations and underline the increasing emphasis on mobility, innovation and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.
