India and China recently convened their 36th Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) meeting to discuss the evolving situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Arunachal Pradesh. The gathering took place on Thursday, 4 August 2026, in New Delhi and was part of ongoing efforts to stabilise bilateral relations between the two nations.

Representing India at the meeting was Joint Secretary (East Asia) Sujit Ghosh, while the Chinese delegation was headed by Hou Yanqi, the Director General of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department. This high-level engagement underscores the commitment of both countries to address outstanding issues and foster a cooperative approach towards border management.

Discussions on LAC and River Data Sharing

During the talks, both parties engaged in comprehensive discussions on conditions along the LAC. There was a mutual understanding to continue utilising established diplomatic and military communications to address any lingering concerns, thereby mitigating potential misunderstandings or miscalculations at the border. Such mechanisms consist of the WMCC, local commander-level meetings, and other previously agreed upon channels designed to maintain effective communication.

Furthermore, the meeting also revisited the achievements from the 24th gathering of Special Representatives regarding the India-China boundary issues. Among the matters discussed were boundary delimitation, border management strategies, institution-building, and cooperation on transborder issues. India reiterated its call for an expedited meeting of the Expert Level Mechanism focused on transborder rivers, highlighting the necessity for China to share technical data on projects located upstream along these rivers.

The subject of transborder rivers is particularly crucial for India’s water security, especially in light of concerns regarding initiatives being undertaken by China in upstream areas.

Emphasis on Peace and Recent Diplomatic Engagements

Both India and China reaffirmed that maintaining peace and tranquillity along the border is vital for the overall development of their bilateral relationship. The recent discussions occurred amidst increased diplomatic interactions between New Delhi and Beijing, with significant engagements taking place over the preceding months.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri recently completed a two-day trip to Beijing concluding on 28 July, during which he held extensive talks with Chinese officials covering a wide array of bilateral matters. His visit followed a meeting on 21 July between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of ASEAN-related discussions held in Manila. Jaishankar emphasised that tranquillity in border areas is a prerequisite for the normalisation of relations, highlighting the need for mutual respect and sensitivity.

India and China have made notable progress in rebuilding relations that deteriorated sharply after the 2020 clashes in Galwan Valley and the extended military stand-off in Eastern Ladakh. Following a series of diplomatic and military negotiations, the two countries have successfully disengaged from multiple friction points along the border. In October 2024, an agreement was reached to disengage from Depsang and Demchok, the final two major trouble spots in Eastern Ladakh, further fostering the path to improved relations.

Since that time, both nations have taken steps to restore various aspects of bilateral engagement, including the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, the reinstatement of visa services, and re-establishing direct flight connectivity.
