Historic Turnout: Nearly 90% of Voters Cast Ballots in First Phase of 2026 Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

The opening chapter of the 2026 elections has etched its name into the history books, as West Bengal witnessed a staggering surge in voter participation. According to the latest data from the Election Commission, a monumental 89.93% of eligible voters had already cast their ballots by 5:00 PM on Thursday.

A New Standard for Participation

From the moment polls opened, the momentum suggested a departure from previous cycles. Despite the implementation of rigorous new protocols including a 96-hour pre-poll liquor ban and strict limitations on motorcycle movement the electorate turned out in droves.

The Election Commission’s strategy, focused on ensuring a secure and orderly environment, appears to have resonated with the public. While minor, isolated incidents were reported in certain pockets, the heavy presence of central paramilitary forces ensured that the first phase remained largely peaceful across the state.

District-Wise Breakdown (As of 5:00 PM)

The participation was consistently high across various regions, with several districts crossing the 90% threshold well before the final hour of polling.

While the majority of districts saw near-record numbers, hill regions like Kalimpong and Darjeeling saw slightly lower, yet still significant, turnouts of 81.98% and 86.49%, respectively.

“Unprecedented Enthusiasm”

Election officials have noted that the 2026 cycle is distinct not just for the turnout, but for the stringent discipline maintained throughout the day. With voting extended until 6:00 PM, the final figures are expected to climb even higher, potentially setting an all-time record for the state.

As the first phase concludes, all eyes now turn to the Election Commission for the final validated tally, which is expected to confirm this as one of the most participated-in elections in recent history.
