Himachal Pradesh to See Rain, Thunderstorms as Western Disturbance Arrives from April 25

The CSR Journal Magazine

The fresh western disturbance is predicted to affect Himachal Pradesh starting April 25, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This development comes amid a rise in temperatures across the state, particularly in mid-hill and low-hill regions. A heatwave has been noticed in certain areas, leading to increased discomfort for residents as conditions have been dry recently.

IMD senior scientist Sandeep Kumar Sharma provided insights into the current weather, mentioning that the past 24 hours saw largely clear skies. However, light rainfall measuring 0.4 mm was recorded in Sangla, with isolated instances of cloud cover and thunderstorms in some northern areas. This suggests that, despite the prevalent high temperatures, some weather activity was present.

Current Temperature Trends

The IMD has reported significant temperature increases in various parts of Himachal Pradesh. Una has recorded the highest maximum temperature at approximately 40 degrees Celsius, whereas Shimla has seen a temperature of 27.2 degrees Celsius. Other areas such as Solan and Dharamshala reported around 33 degrees Celsius, while Kangra reached 36.4 degrees Celsius. Notably, temperatures at several weather stations are currently 2-7 degrees higher than the seasonal average.

On April 24, a heatwave warning was issued for Una, Kangra, and surrounding areas due to the sustained high temperatures. With summer approaching, these rising temperatures have heightened concerns among local residents and authorities. The IMD’s warnings coincide with the increased likelihood of thunderstorms and rain, which could offer some respite from the prevailing heat.

As the western disturbance becomes active, light rain and thunderstorms are expected in regions such as Kangra and Chamba on April 25. This weather activity is anticipated to peak on that day, bringing light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms to multiple locations throughout the state. Following this surge, the intensity of weather activity is forecast to diminish on April 26 and 27, with only isolated light rain predicted.

Rainfall and Climate Patterns

The rainfall trends thus far in April indicate that Kangra district has seen a precipitation deficit of around 14 per cent relative to normal levels. Although the overall rainfall situation across Himachal Pradesh remains marginally below average, the disparity in weather patterns is a cause for consideration among meteorologists.

Furthermore, significant deviations in temperature readings have been observed across various stations, indicating a potential warming trend in the region. Areas such as Kangra, Bhuntar, and Kalpa have registered temperatures above normal, highlighting that the upward trend in temperatures may continue as the state transitions further into the warmer months.

By April 28 and 29, the IMD expects a resurgence in rainfall and thunderstorms, particularly in the mid and high-hill regions. This may contribute to alleviating some of the dryness experienced earlier in the month. The continuous monitoring of weather patterns will be crucial in preparing for the changes that the western disturbance may bring in the coming days.
