Heavy Rain Submerges Andheri Subway, Triggers Waterlogging Across Mumbai

The CSR Journal Magazine

Mumbai woke up to heavy rainfall on Monday after overnight showers led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas and forced the closure of the Andheri subway, one of the city’s key traffic corridors.

The fresh spell of rain comes as weather agencies warn of continued wet conditions across Mumbai and neighbouring districts over the coming days. With Monday marking the start of the working week, authorities have cautioned commuters about possible disruptions during peak travel hours.

Andheri Subway Shut After Waterlogging

The Andheri subway was closed to vehicular traffic at 1:46 am after it became fully submerged following overnight rainfall.

Police personnel were deployed outside the subway to prevent motorists from entering the flooded stretch and to avoid accidents.

Waterlogging was reported from several low-lying pockets across the city as rain intensified overnight, raising concerns about traffic congestion and delays during the morning commute.

IMD Issues Yellow Alert For Mumbai Region

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and adjoining areas, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, moderate rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph on Monday.

Private weather forecaster AccuWeather also predicted a rainy and breezy day for the city, with the maximum temperature expected to touch 31 degrees Celsius and the minimum likely to remain around 27 degrees Celsius.

Humidity levels remained high at 94 per cent, adding to the discomfort caused by persistent rainfall.

According to AccuWeather, rain and thunderstorms are likely to continue from Monday morning through late Saturday night, with a possibility of flooding in some parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

More Rain Forecast Through The Week

Weather agencies have forecast moderate rainfall accompanied by stronger winds of 40-50 kmph over the next two days, followed by isolated heavy showers later in the week.

Residents have been advised to remain cautious, especially during the evening and night, when thunderstorm activity is expected to become more intense.

The latest spell follows a brief break in rainfall over the weekend after Mumbai experienced its first major monsoon burst of the season earlier this month.

Monsoon Activity Expected To Strengthen

During the earlier spell, the Colaba observatory recorded 248 mm of rainfall, while the Santacruz observatory received 225 mm, leading to widespread waterlogging, traffic snarls and disruption to daily life across several parts of the city.

Rainfall activity had weakened significantly in the 24 hours before the current spell, with Santacruz recording almost no rain and Colaba receiving only around 5 mm, indicating a temporary weakening of the monsoon current along the Konkan coast.

However, weather agency Skymet said conditions were expected to become favourable again from June 29 as the monsoon current strengthened over the Arabian Sea and India’s west coast.

With southwesterly winds gathering strength and moisture levels increasing, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected during the first week of July across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Palghar, Raigad and other parts of coastal Maharashtra.

The latest round of showers has already caused flooding in some areas of Mumbai, and forecasters expect wet weather to persist across the region in the coming days.
