The Indian government recently organised a national interaction as part of the ‘Catch the Rain’ initiative, which aims to promote efficient water management practices. This event specifically focused on 75 cities implementing the Shallow Aquifer Management (SAM) programme under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT). It was facilitated by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in coordination with the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA).
The principal purpose of this engagement was to create a platform for these cities to discuss their respective progress, share best practices, and highlight successful groundwater recharge efforts. This initiative is vital for bolstering urban water security, emphasising the importance of community involvement and scientific planning in achieving sustainable outcomes.
Details of the Shallow Aquifer Management Programme
The SAM programme is designed to assist municipalities in improving groundwater recharge through various scientifically informed interventions. Participating cities are utilising several methods, including the construction of recharge shafts, injection wells, check dams, gabion walls, circular khals, and modular recharge pits. These measures collectively aim to enhance sustainable rainwater harvesting efforts and promote climate resilience.
According to MoHUA, the interventions not only aim at replenishing aquifers but also contribute significantly to improving urban infrastructure, essential for managing stormwater. The initiative underpins the government’s commitment to advancing sustainable practices in urban water management, further reinforcing the objectives set forth in the ‘Catch the Rain’ campaign.
During the interaction, D Thara, Additional Secretary of MoHUA, presided over the discussions, which were moderated by Isha Kalia, Joint Secretary of MoHUA. Representatives from various Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) participated, sharing their experiences and challenges faced during the implementation of these groundwater recharge initiatives.
Highlights from Participating Cities
<h4Similarly, Vizianagaram reported noteworthy improvements in groundwater levels due to the initiatives under the SAM programme. Nagpur also committed to constructing an additional 100 recharge structures during the ongoing monsoon season, emphasising its dedication to enhancing groundwater management.
