On August 13, 2026, it was reported that the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Mumbai dismantled an interstate drug trafficking network, apprehending two individuals and confiscating 1.060 kg of Charas, alongside a large haul of prescription opioids. The first operation took place on August 8, when NCB Mumbai intercepted a passenger bus between Gujarat and Mumbai, leading to the arrest of N. Shaikh in Mumbai. During this operation, authorities recovered 1,080 bottles of Codeine Based Cough Syrup (CBCS), weighing a total of 108 kg.

Investigations revealed that the drugs were being transported through passenger buses to avoid detection, and they were intended for retail distribution across Mumbai, Bhiwandi, and surrounding areas. Upon interrogation, Shaikh disclosed information about a distributor located in Gujarat, prompting NCB officials to conduct immediate follow-up operations.

After detailed field surveillance, the NCB team located the distributor’s godown in Vadodara, Gujarat. A subsequent search led to the discovery of 13,938 bottles of CBCS and 12,240 Tramadol tablets. Investigators found evidence that multiple batch numbers on the CBCS bottles had been tampered with to disguise their diversion. Additionally, several incriminating documents were seized, including fake invoices related to the distribution of prescription narcotics.

Further Developments in the Investigation

Further inquiries indicated that N. Shaikh, primarily operating from Bhiwandi in Maharashtra’s Thane district, had a previous arrest by Maharashtra Police under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. The Gujarat-based distributor who has been apprehended is also wanted in earlier NDPS cases. NCB officials emphasised the extent of the network, suggesting its operations extended beyond Maharashtra and Gujarat.

In a separate operation conducted on August 12, NCB Mumbai acted on specific intelligence and conducted a search at the residence of a woman identified as A.J. Shaikh in Ghatkopar, Mumbai. During this search, officials seized 1.060 kg of Charas hidden among household items. It was reported that the contraband had been recently acquired for local distribution.

Investigations revealed that the strict enforcement of drug laws, coupled with the approach of the festive season, had limited the supply of Charas in the area, leading A.J. Shaikh and her associates to take advantage of the situation by procuring drugs for higher price sales. Additional key associates of the trafficking network have also been identified, with efforts underway to locate and arrest them.

Risks Associated with Seized Substances

Officials highlighted the dangers posed by the seized substances, noting that both Tramadol and CBCS are prescription-only opioid medications with recognised medical applications. Tramadol, used for pain management, affects the Central Nervous System (CNS), with non-prescribed use risking shallow breathing and rapid heart rate, which can be life-threatening. Similarly, CBCS contains Codeine, an opioid affecting the CNS, where overdose can lead to severe respiratory distress and potentially fatal complications.

The ongoing investigations reflect the NCB’s sustained commitment to dismantle organised drug syndicates and hold habitual offenders accountable. Both cases underline the persistent challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing drug trafficking across state lines in India.
