Gandhinagar Railway Station in Jaipur Undergoes Major Renovation

The CSR Journal Magazine

Gandhinagar Railway Station in Jaipur, which has been operational for 151 years, is set to enter a new phase as it undergoes extensive renovations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The redevelopment initiative, which is estimated to cost Rs 211 crore, is nearing completion after nearly three years of work. The project aims to modernise the station while preserving its unique identity, offering passengers a world-class travel experience.

The station, notable for being India’s second all-women railway station for the past eight years, is committed to improving its infrastructure and facilities without losing its heritage. The transformation is regarded as a significant move towards enhancing the traveller’s experience in Jaipur.

Modern Facilities and Passenger Comfort

The redevelopment includes the almost-complete construction of the main and secondary entrance buildings, both designed as G+2 structures. A key feature will be a central air concourse spanning 72 metres in width and nearly 2,700 square metres in area, which is designed to serve as the primary hub for passenger movement. This area will house two air-conditioned seating lounges, alongside a free waiting space, ensuring that all travellers enjoy enhanced comfort.

In addition to seating areas, the new layout will feature a shopping complex, a cafeteria, a game zone, and various commercial facilities, all designed to cater to the diverse needs of commuters. This will promote a more pleasant and engaging environment for those passing through the station.

Improving accessibility is a key component of the upgrade. The station will be equipped with eight lifts and four escalators. Facilities catering to passengers with disabilities have also been integrated into the design, making it easier for all individuals to navigate the station efficiently.

Security Enhancements and Eco-Friendly Initiatives

Security measures have been substantially improved as part of the refurbishment process. A total of 217 high-resolution CCTV cameras have been installed throughout the station to ensure safety. In addition, a modern fire safety system is being put in place, complete with fire hoses, automatic sprinklers, and fire alarms, intended to provide quick and effective responses during emergencies.

To cater to the increased number of visitors, a two-level basement parking facility has been developed, covering over 7,000 square metres for both two-wheeler and four-wheeler parking. Additionally, approximately 6,000 square metres of new platform shelters will enhance passenger comfort during their wait.

This redevelopment project is also emphasising sustainability and energy efficiency. A 1,376-kilowatt solar power plant has been incorporated to lower overall energy consumption. Furthermore, the station will incorporate rainwater harvesting systems, efficient waste management practices, and energy-efficient technologies. As a result of these initiatives, the project has received a Platinum Green Building rating, highlighting its commitment to eco-friendly practices.

Cultural and Architectural Significance

The architectural transformation of Gandhinagar Railway Station is one of the project’s most prominent features. The redesign is centred around the heritage theme of Jaipur’s Pink City and incorporates elements inspired by local art and culture. This approach aims to provide visitors with an immediate connection to Rajasthan’s rich architectural heritage upon their arrival.

The design intends to marry the traditional aesthetics of the region with modern functionality, ensuring that the station is not only a transportation hub but also a cultural landmark. By celebrating Jaipur’s unique identity, the renovated station seeks to enhance the travel experience and leave a lasting impression on all visitors.
