France Calls India A Top Priority Partner Ahead Of PM Modi’s Visit

The CSR Journal Magazine

Ahead of PM Modi’s visit to France and his participation in the G7 Summit, French diplomatic sources have described India as a “top priority” partner and highlighted the deep trust and strategic alignment that characterise the relationship between the two countries.

French officials said the partnership had evolved beyond a conventional buyer-seller arrangement and was now based on equality, confidence and shared interests across defence, technology, energy and global governance.

“We have reached a level of trust and confidence where it is easy for both of us to talk about anything,” diplomatic sources said, underlining the importance Paris attaches to India’s growing role on the world stage.

France is also closely watching India’s leadership as the current chair of BRICS and continues to view New Delhi as an influential voice following its successful presidency of the G20.

G7 Summit To Address West Asia Crisis

French sources confirmed that the upcoming G7 Summit will include a dedicated discussion on the rapidly evolving situation in West Asia.

Emphasising the importance of maintaining maritime security and freedom of navigation, officials noted that while France is not directly involved in the conflict, developments in the region have implications for the wider international community.

“Emphasis on free navigation; we are not part of the war, but it has an impact on all of us,” the sources said.

The invitation extended to India to participate in the G7 Summit reflects the importance Paris places on engaging New Delhi on major global issues.

According to French officials, India has become an active participant across various G7 tracks and remains a crucial partner in addressing geopolitical and economic challenges.

Defence And Technology Cooperation To Deepen

A major focus of PM Modi’s visit is expected to be the further expansion of defence and technology cooperation between the two countries.

French diplomatic sources rejected the notion that the relationship is based on a traditional client-supplier model, stressing instead that both nations engage as equal partners.

“It is not a client-customer relationship. It is equal to equal,” the sources said.

They added that future defence agreements would increasingly align with India’s “Make in India” initiative.

Regarding the Rafale programme, French officials indicated that upcoming arrangements would differ from previous deals and would include greater integration of indigenous Indian weapons systems.

Several announcements relating to innovation and technological collaboration are also expected during the visit.

New Phase In Nuclear Cooperation

Civil nuclear energy is set to be another key area of discussion during PM Modi’s engagements in France.

French officials expressed optimism about recent legislative reforms in India and said French utility companies are currently holding discussions with major Indian stakeholders.

“We are at the beginning of a new phase,” the sources said, adding that a clearer picture of future collaborations could emerge by the end of the year.

The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) also featured in the discussions. Despite the ongoing instability in West Asia, French officials maintained that the initiative remains strategically relevant.

While acknowledging that the present regional situation poses challenges, they stressed that consultations on the project are continuing and that the long-term vision behind the corridor remains intact.

PM Modi’s visit is expected to further consolidate one of India’s most significant strategic partnerships and deepen cooperation across a broad spectrum of sectors.
