Firoz Merchant is a prominent Indian entrepreneur and humanitarian based in Dubai. He established the Pure Gold Group in 1989, transforming it into a leading jewellery retail chain boasting over 170 outlets across 13 countries. Merchant’s philanthropic endeavors, however, extend beyond business, focusing significantly on humanitarian causes and debt settlement initiatives for prisoners within the UAE.

Initiative for Releasing Insolvent Inmates

Launched in 2008, Merchant’s charitable initiative has successfully facilitated the release of more than 20,000 inmates who were imprisoned due to financial burdens. This program operates in collaboration with local authorities and is supported by the Khalifa Foundation, impacting various emirates such as Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, and Ras Al Khaimah. With the onset of Ramadan 2026, 497 inmates have already regained their freedom, while more cases are currently under consideration for release during the holy month. In the previous year, the initiative saw significant outcomes, with 2,972 inmates from over 50 nationalities being released, and approximately Dhs2.4 million earmarked for debt settlement. Additionally, in efforts to facilitate the reintegration of deserving individuals, return airfare has been provided to enable them to return to their home countries.

Healthcare Support Extension

In an expansion of his philanthropic efforts, Merchant has introduced a healthcare component to this year’s Ramadan campaign. On February 18, coinciding with the start of the holy month, he engaged with officials from the Cancer Patient Care Society in Abu Dhabi to discuss pathways for offering financial aid to cancer patients encumbered by rising treatment costs. His prior contributions include a Dhs1 million donation in 2025 aimed at covering dialysis expenses for 11 patients in critical need of financial assistance. This year’s initiative uniquely integrates two essential areas of support: addressing the release of individuals imprisoned due to unpaid debts while simultaneously enhancing healthcare support for patients battling severe medical conditions.
