On August 10, in Ranchi, Jharkhand, police utilised water cannons to disperse a large group of students protesting near the Vidhan Sabha. The demonstration was organised by the JPSC-JSSC Reform Morcha in response to alleged irregularities in the examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level (JSSC-CGL). The participants aimed to breach police barricades as part of their march.

The protests drew significant attention as students voiced their grievances regarding the examination and recruitment processes. Among the participants was Devendra Nath Mahto, a leader of the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM), who joined the march alongside the reform coalition. Mahto conveyed the urgency of the students’ demands and insisted that the state government must respond to their concerns.

Commencement of Hunger Strike

Devendra Nath Mahto has been on a hunger strike for nine consecutive days at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium, a central location for the protests. He carried a portrait of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren during the demonstration. Addressing fellow protesters, Mahto expressed that physical barriers, such as barbed wire, would not deter their resolve to seek justice. He stated, “I came here in an ambulance… The government will have to listen to us.” His assertions emphasised that students should not be viewed as heroes but as common citizens advocating for their rights.

During the protest, Mahto cautioned against any police action that might lead to violence. He referred to the significance of the day as it was also Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s birthday and highlighted the risks associated with police aggression. “Do not do anything that causes someone to bleed or get injured,” he implored, reflecting concerns about public safety during the unrest.

The protesters are demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the alleged discrepancies surrounding the examination processes. Mahto expressed that failure to meet their demands would equate to a failure of democracy in Jharkhand.

Law Enforcement Response

In conjunction with the protests, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) initiated an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). This action is believed to relate to the alleged irregularities in the JPSC examinations, highlighting the government’s acknowledgement of the seriousness of these claims.

As tensions continue to rise, the police presence has increased, attempting to maintain order during the demonstrations. While the protestors aim to secure their demands through peaceful means, the situation remains volatile, with both sides on high alert. The use of water cannons signals a hardline stance by law enforcement in response to the escalating protests.

Authorities have called for calm as they navigate the complex dynamics of public dissent and the validity of the students’ claims. With ongoing protests and heightened scrutiny on the examination processes, the state government faces significant pressure to address the issues raised by the protesters.
