The External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, has officially conducted the Computerised Draw of Lots for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra scheduled for 2026. This event was marked by the announcement of selected pilgrims who will undertake this significant journey. According to Randhir Jaiswal, the Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, the Minister extended warm congratulations to the chosen yatris, wishing them a rewarding pilgrimage experience.

Details of the Yatra 2026

The Kailash Manasarovar Yatra for 2026 is set to commence in June and conclude in August. A total of 1,000 pilgrims have been selected via a transparent and equitable computer-generated random selection process. This method ensured gender balance among the participants, as noted in a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs. The selected Yatris will travel in 20 groups of 50 through the Lipulekh and Nathu La passes, both of which are accessible by motor vehicles and require minimal trekking.

Comprehensive route and batch information is available on the official Yatra website, providing prospective travellers with all necessary details. Notifications informing shortlisted Yatris of their selection have been disseminated through SMS and email, ensuring timely communication.

On May 1, 2026, Yu Jing, the spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in India, expressed support for the pilgrimage’s resumption. She noted that China is set to facilitate the travel of 1,000 Indian pilgrims this year, highlighting the cultural and spiritual significance of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra.

Cultural Importance of the Yatra

The Kailash Manasarovar Yatra holds substantial religious significance for Hindus, as it is believed to be the dwelling place of Lord Shiva. It is also significant for Jains and Buddhists, attracting hundreds of pilgrims annually. Yu Jing remarked on social media, welcoming the reinstatement of this pilgrimage, which she believes fosters faith and friendship between China and India.

In her post on X, she stated, “We are pleased to facilitate 1,000 Indian pilgrims this year. May this Yatra become a bridge of faith, friendship, and people-to-people bonds between our two great civilisations.” Such statements underscore the mutual respect and cooperation between both nations regarding this revered pilgrimage.

Previously, on April 30, the Ministry of External Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to organising the Yatra in collaboration with the Government of China. The pilgrimage is not just a journey through the mountains, but rather a vital cultural interchange that contributes to the relationship between the two nations.
