The protest led by Congress MPs Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra at Lok Kalyan Marg resulted in their detention by Delhi Police on July 21. The demonstration aimed to hold Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan accountable for the NEET-UG paper leak scandal. Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar condemned the police’s actions, describing the detainment as unfortunate and asserting that the protest would persist until the students receive justice.

Shivakumar stated to ANI that the movement represents a united front for students’ causes. He emphasised that more than 100 Members of Parliament (MPs) were present to support this cause and insisted that they would continue to press for discussions in Parliament regarding the matter. His comments highlight the determination of opposition leaders to challenge government policies related to educational integrity.

Unity Among Opposition Leaders

Purnea MP Rajesh Ranjan, also known as Pappu Yadav, condemned the police actions against the detained Congress leaders. He characterised their presence at the protest as a demonstration of unity among opposition parties. Yadav remarked that the government resorts to force rather than engaging in constructive dialogue about pressing issues affecting students and farmers, which he described as a cowardly approach.

The gathering saw support from various leaders, including Akhilesh Yadav, the chief of the Samajwadi Party, along with Nationalist Congress Party MP Supriya Sule. Yadav’s remarks stressed the unity among opposition ranks and aimed to galvanise support against perceived governmental oppression of peaceful demonstrators. He asserted that this collective stance would undoubtedly amplify the call for justice from various sectors of the public.

According to Yadav, the opposition’s commitment to addressing grievances is unwavering. The gathering at Lok Kalyan Marg ignited discussions around issues faced by students, and the overall sentiment was one of solidarity against authoritarian measures taken by the administration.

Police Response and Government Assurance

During the protest, while aiming to remove Rahul Gandhi from the site, police were seen forcibly detaining him, prompting widespread outrage among supporters. Several other Congress leaders, including K Suresh and former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, were also apprehended as law enforcement dispersed the protesters, who had marched from Rajaji Marg.

The demonstration was partly in response to alleged police brutality against students protesting the NEET-UG exam issues. Such actions have sparked alarm regarding the treatment of peaceful protesters and the protection of student rights within the current political climate.

In the aftermath, Union Minister of State for the Prime Minister’s Office, Jitendra Singh, stated that Rahul Gandhi had reneged on a prior commitment, implying that the protest continued despite the government’s assurance to conduct a parliamentary discussion regarding the NEET-UG examination. Singh’s remarks reflect the complexities involved in the ongoing debate surrounding educational policies and political accountability.
