Director of NGO Arrested in Nagpur Following Allegations of Harassment by Female Employees

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent arrest of an NGO director in Nagpur, Maharashtra, follows serious allegations made by four female employees. These allegations include claims of molestation and religious coercion, leading to a police investigation that commenced on April 20. The accused is Riyaz Fazil Qazi, the director of Universal Multipurpose Society, a non-governmental organisation reportedly engaged in the education of underprivileged children.

According to Police Inspector Haresh Kalsekar from Mankapur Police Station, the complaints were formally lodged after a group of women approached law enforcement on April 18. The inspector noted their testimonies indicated a pattern of inappropriate behaviour, with one individual claiming harassment dating back two to three years.

Moreover, some complainants reported that the director attempted to impose specific religious practices upon them, which was met with resistance. The situation escalated when one complainant recounted an incident on her birthday when she was allegedly harassed by the accused, further solidifying the claims against him.

Actions Taken by Law Enforcement

In light of the accusations, the police initiated an immediate investigation following the formal complaints. Inspector Kalsekar confirmed that the accused was arrested on the same day the complaints were lodged and subsequently presented before a court. The police were granted custody of Qazi until April 23 to facilitate further inquiries.

In addition to the allegations of harassment and coercion, the investigation has revealed that the accused allegedly made disparaging comments regarding the character of female employees during a phone conversation with the parent of one of the former employees. This incident reportedly served as a catalyst for the other women to unite and seek legal recourse.

As the investigation continues, the police have invoked applicable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as relevant provisions from the Information Technology Act. Authorities have identified four primary victims thus far and anticipate that more individuals may come forward as the probe progresses.

Implications for the NGO Sector

The situation raises significant concerns about workplace safety and the potential for further victims within the Non-Governmental Organisation sector. Universal Multipurpose Society, which focuses on education for children from labour-class families, now faces scrutiny regarding its internal practices and the treatment of its employees.

As the investigation unfolds, many are looking to law enforcement and regulatory bodies to ensure comprehensive measures are taken to protect employees from similar experiences in the future. The case has implications for both the NGO sector and the broader questions of workplace ethics, particularly concerning the treatment of female employees.

In the coming days, further details are likely to emerge as the police delve deeper into both the allegations and the organisational structure of the NGO involved. Stakeholders from within and outside the organisation are closely monitoring the developments, emphasising the importance of safeguarding employee welfare across all sectors.
