Uddhav Thackeray, the Chief of Shiv Sena (UBT), has intensified his criticism of the Union Government concerning the ongoing student protests and examination-related controversies. At a recent press conference, he underscored the importance of dialogue in a democratic framework, attributing the escalation of tensions to the government’s lack of communication with the protesting students. Thackeray insisted that effective engagement with the youth is essential to prevent misunderstandings and resolve grievances.

Thackeray stated, “If someone protests, it’s the government’s duty to engage with them about their concerns. This government failed to initiate dialogue, which has contributed to the worsening of the situation. Had they sought to talk to the students from the beginning, these protests may not have reached such a critical juncture.” His comments highlight a broader sentiment about the necessity for understanding between the government and its citizens.

Congress Party Intensifies Its Protest Actions

In parallel, the Congress party has stepped up its protest activities, with senior leader Pawan Khera announcing that party Members of Parliament (MPs) would express their dissent by wearing black in the house. Khera explained that this act of solidarity serves to demonstrate the party’s opposition to what they perceive as governmental shortcomings in addressing student issues. “All our MPs will wear black today to mark our protest against the treatment of students in the capital,” he stated.

Khera drew a distinction between the intentions of the opposition and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming that while the Congress party aims to protect youth interests, the BJP appears more concerned with “saving faces” within the government. He remarked, “The purpose of our protest is to protect the interest of the youth. The purpose of BJP’s protest is to protect their minister Dharmendra Pradhan.” This characterisation reflects a growing divide between the government and opposition parties in India.

Furthermore, Khera reaffirmed the Congress party’s commitment to stand alongside the student community, urging them not to lose hope amid ongoing unrest. He conveyed a message of solidarity, saying, “The Congress, including Rahul Gandhi and our supporters, stands firmly with the youth of this country.” This assertion aims to reassure students and encourage them to remain resilient during this tumultuous period.

Opposition Demonstrates Unity in Protest

In response to the central government’s handling of the protests, opposition parties have adopted a united front, with various leaders donning black as a sign of protest. This coordinated action, referred to as “Black Day,” aims to highlight the dissatisfaction with the government’s approach to the student demonstrations and the broader issues within the national education system.

The wave of protests underscore the tension between the central government and the youth, particularly regarding policies affecting educational institutions. As members of opposition parties gather in Parliament, they invoke their collective experiences and frustrations to critique the government’s actions, or lack thereof, in addressing student concerns effectively.
