Delhi Steps Up Heatwave Relief As LG Reviews Cooling Zones And Mobile Support Units

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu assessed the ongoing relief operations and preventive measures in response to the severe heatwave affecting the national capital. The review meeting took place on the evening of May 28, 2026, and included participation from relevant officials, including the Divisional Commissioner, as noted in an official press statement.

Officials informed the Lieutenant Governor that the Revenue Department of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) has set up multiple dedicated Cooling Zones throughout eight districts. These zones are strategically located in an effort to provide respite to residents faced with extreme temperatures.

In addition to the Cooling Zones, Mobile Heat Relief Units (MHRU) have been operational since May 6, 2026. These units are actively deployed across all 13 districts, delivering assistance and essential support to citizens suffering from the heat.

Health Minister Reviews Hospital Preparedness

On Tuesday, May 28, 2026, Health Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh evaluated preparations at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital to address the ongoing heatwave. His visit included inspections of emergency care systems, intensive care unit (ICU) facilities, the readiness of medical personnel, and the overall patient management infrastructure.

During the assessment, Dr. Singh emphasised the need for continuous monitoring of the situation to ensure that citizens do not encounter difficulties during this period of extreme weather. He implored residents to minimise prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and to seek immediate medical assistance if they experience symptoms such as weakness, dizziness, dehydration, fever, or heat-related ailments.

The Health Minister reassured the public, stating that the healthcare system in Delhi is well-equipped to handle challenges brought about by the heatwave. The priority remains to ensure that every citizen has access to necessary support during this harsh climate.

Innovative Relief Measures for Personnel

In response to the extreme weather conditions, the department has initiated a pioneering relief measure aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of personnel working outdoors. This includes the introduction of air-conditioned helmets and portable fans designed to assist officers in maintaining comfort while managing high-traffic areas.

Currently being trialled by traffic personnel stationed for extended hours in direct sunlight, these cooling helmets have been described by Assistant Sub-Inspector Veer Singh as a transformative solution. He noted that the technology effectively keeps officers cool and comfortable throughout their shifts.

According to ASI Veer Singh, the helmets operate efficiently for approximately four to five hours, contingent on the charge of the battery. This operational duration is crucial for providing continuous comfort during peak heat hours. Furthermore, for those overseeing VIP movements, the department has implemented mobile vans that serve as hydration and nutrition hubs, delivering vital water and food to prevent exhaustion among personnel.

The initiative to provide these resources comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Red and Orange alerts across numerous states, warning citizens of dangerously high temperatures that may pose life-threatening risks. The Delhi government remains committed to ensuring the health and safety of both its residents and personnel during this period of extreme heat.
