The recent inspection across Delhi has led to the identification of 774 schools with serious safety deficiencies. This assessment was part of the Child Protection Month initiative, which aimed to enhance child safety standards within educational institutions. The inspection was conducted from July 13 to 24 and was overseen by various regulatory bodies.

According to a disclosure from Lok Nivas, a total of 1,677 schools were examined using a comprehensive Student Safety Checklist. This checklist was developed based on guidelines established by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR), and regulations under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The results revealed that private schools were the most affected, accounting for the majority of the flagged safety issues. In response to these findings, authorities have instigated corrective measures to ensure deficiencies are adequately addressed.

Composition of Inspected Schools

The inspections encompassed a wide range of school types, including government, government-aided, and private institutions. A breakdown of the 1,677 schools surveyed reveals that 790 were government schools, 812 were designated as private schools, and 75 were government-aided. The assessment determined that safety lapses were present in 270 government schools, 463 private schools, and 41 government-aided establishments.

Notably, the extent of the deficiencies among private schools was disproportionately high compared to those inspected. This discrepancy has drawn the attention of monitoring teams, prompting additional scrutiny to ensure compliance with safety regulations.

The inspections were carried out by teams that included representatives from various sectors, such as parents, the Directorate of Education, the Women and Child Development Department, Delhi Police, and school administrators. This collaborative approach aimed to provide a thorough examination of safety protocols across all types of schools.

Future Actions and Compliance Measures

The statement from Lok Nivas emphasised that schools identified with safety issues would be required to implement corrective actions promptly. Follow-up inspections are scheduled to verify that these measures are effectively carried out. The authorities consider this initiative not merely a formality but a commitment to ensuring lasting improvements in school safety.

Authorities have assured the public that the inspection drive will not conclude until all 5,633 educational institutions in Delhi have undergone the same rigorous evaluation. This ongoing initiative is designed to embed child safety as a core value within the operational framework of schools across the capital.

In launching this drive, Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta aimed to ensure that safety and accountability become integral components of educational culture in Delhi. The long-term objective is to foster an environment of preparedness, establishing consistent safety practices that protect the well-being of children in educational settings.
