The academic year at St Stephen’s College in Delhi University has commenced with the introduction of a new dress code prohibiting shorts in various campus locations. This regulation was communicated in a notice signed by Principal Professor Susan Elias, addressing students, referred to as “Junior Members.” The document outlines several guidelines intended to uphold decorum within the college premises.

Locations Where Shorts Are Prohibited

The notice specifies that shorts are no longer permitted in several areas on campus, including classrooms, tutorial rooms, laboratories, the college chapel, the assembly hall, the library, and the dining hall. While the rationale for this dress code has not been officially disclosed, the document stresses that the restrictions are applicable in various academic and communal spaces.

This decision has generated discussion on social media, with numerous students expressing their curiosity regarding the necessity of such clothing regulations in educational settings. The absence of further explanation has led to increased curiosity among the student community.

Additional Campus Regulations Reinforced

The newly established dress code is not the sole update to the campus regulations. The college has also reiterated existing rules regarding cleanliness and smoking on the premises. Students have been reminded that the entire campus is designated as a smoke-free environment, and violations will result in disciplinary measures. Additionally, students are encouraged to dispose of waste responsibly, utilising designated dustbins throughout the campus.

Furthermore, students have been instructed to carry their valid identification cards at all times while on campus. As part of the updated guidelines, students may be required to present these ID cards prior to entering the dining hall for meals, ensuring proper identification within college facilities.

No Official Clarification on the Dress Code

The recent implementation of these guidelines follows a period of scrutiny surrounding the college’s faculty recruitment practices earlier this year. In April, the University of Delhi’s Executive Council raised concerns regarding St Stephen’s College’s criteria for shortlisting candidates for assistant professor positions, which was deemed inconsistent with the university’s standards. The Council advised the college to delay the issuance of appointment letters until an investigation could be conducted by a designated committee.

As the academic session unfolds with these new regulations in place, the dress code is anticipated to remain a focal point for students, who are likely to continue discussing its implications and necessity in the context of campus life.
