Delhi Police Encounter Leads to Injury of Rape-Murder Case Suspect

The CSR Journal Magazine

The accused in a harrowing case involving the kidnapping, rape, and murder of an eleven-year-old girl in Mehrauli, Delhi, was shot in the leg by police during an attempted escape. This incident unfolded on Tuesday evening when the Delhi Police were escorting 35-year-old Bablu to the location of the crime on the Gurugram-Faridabad road for a reconstruction of events. The accused allegedly capitalised on the situation to flee, prompting law enforcement to discharge their weapons in an effort to detain him.

Details of the Crime and Arrest

The tragic events of this case date back to the morning of June 20, 2026, when the young victim was sleeping on a footpath with her family at CDR Chowk in Mehrauli. Allegedly, around 5:00 am, Bablu, who was reportedly under the influence, snatched the girl and sped away in a vehicle he had waiting. The victim’s father was awakened by the incident and pursued the vehicle in a desperate attempt to rescue his daughter.

A prompt response from the police followed a call to the police control room. Officers examined CCTV footage which initially displayed only the shadow of the vehicle involved. However, through GPS data from ride-sharing companies, the police traced Bablu’s location and arrested him in Vikaspuri within four hours after the crime.

During questioning, Bablu allegedly admitted to having driven the girl approximately twenty kilometres to a remote area in the woods. Here, he reportedly restrained her inside the vehicle, assaulted her, and ultimately strangled her using a piece of cloth before abandoning the body. After this, he continued his work as a driver by picking up another passenger in Gurugram and transporting them to West Delhi.

Previous Criminal History and Response from Authorities

Bablu is reported to have a prior record, with five criminal cases filed against him, raising concerns about the safety protocols in place for app-based taxi services. Following the events of the police encounter and the suspect’s subsequent hospitalisation, the Delhi Police confirmed that they would be issuing strict directives to ride-sharing companies. These directives aim to scrutinise how a driver with such a significant criminal history was able to operate on their platforms.

The police’s action highlights ongoing concerns regarding the vetting processes of transportation services and their ability to ensure the safety of passengers. This case has drawn considerable attention and demands for accountability regarding the regulatory mechanisms governing app-based cab services, as parents and communities call for stricter safety measures.

As the investigation continues, authorities are under pressure to enhance the framework surrounding the operation of taxi services and better protect vulnerable members of society. The tragic outcome of this case has prompted discussions about both preventative measures and the need for rapid responses by law enforcement to ensure incidents of this nature are promptly addressed.
