Death Toll from Russian Strikes on Ukraine Reaches 13 with Over 85 Injured

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent Russian missile and drone attacks have resulted in at least 13 confirmed fatalities and over 85 injuries in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. This bombardment lasted for 11 hours and occurred overnight from July 1 to July 2. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had earlier raised alarms regarding a significant escalation in military aggression from Moscow.

Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko acknowledged the increasing death toll, stating that emergency services worked diligently throughout the night to rescue individuals trapped amidst the wreckage of heavily impacted buildings. The attacks reportedly targeted 30 different locations within the city.

Russian Government’s Acknowledgment

The Russian Ministry of Defence has officially acknowledged conducting a broad military operation, claiming it employed “high-precision, long-range weapons” to target military and energy sectors in Kyiv as well as in the Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Cherkasy, and Chernihiv regions. This message contradicts the accounts provided by Ukrainian authorities, who assert that the strikes were not aimed at military assets but instead devastated civilian neighbourhoods.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha addressed the situation through social media, emphasising the need for urgent international support, particularly in the form of air defence systems and enhanced sanctions against Russia. He denounced the strikes as severe war crimes, indicating that the death toll could continue to rise as rescue efforts progress.

In his statements, Sybiha highlighted that rationalising the Russian attacks as reprisals for Ukrainian strikes is unjustifiable. He firmly stated that Ukraine maintains the right to defend itself against aggression as outlined under Article 51 of the UN Charter, and called for a clearer distinction between aggressors and those defending their sovereignty.

Call for International Support

In a post on social media platform X, Foreign Minister Sybiha urged international allies to expedite their assistance, particularly concerning air defence capabilities for Ukraine. He outlined that Russian attacks on Kyiv have resulted in significant civilian casualties and destruction of infrastructure, characterising these actions as a form of terror directed at innocent civilians.

Zelensky, while in Ireland prior to the strikes, articulated the ongoing threat posed by President Vladimir Putin. He stated that to end the conflict, measures must be taken to render it untenable for the Russian leader to continue military operations. This discourse highlights both the urgency for international military support and the imperative for diplomatic resolutions to the drawn-out conflict.

On June 25, the Russian Foreign Ministry had issued warnings to the United States concerning continued military assistance to Ukraine. They cautioned that such involvement could lead to significant repercussions, thereby reinforcing the tense dynamics within the region and globally amid ongoing hostilities.
