Senior Congress figure Sandeep Dikshit has condemned the central government’s response to ongoing student protests across India. He stated that the concerns raised by students, who have been demonstrating for two months, are being overlooked. According to Dikshit, while any form of abusive language is unacceptable, treating students as if they were criminals crosses a line that should not be tolerated. He emphasised that the issues at hand deserve serious attention from the authorities.

FIR Registered Over Alleged Abusive Remarks

The comments made by Dikshit transpired shortly after an FIR was filed against a woman from Noida. This legal action reportedly followed her use of derogatory language directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a protest organised by the ‘Cockroach Janta Party’ (CJP) about the NEET paper leak incident. The registration of this FIR has sparked further debate about the government’s willingness to confront dissenting voices, particularly among the youth.

On the previous day, Saurav Das, the chief spokesperson for CJP, expressed strong disapproval of the FIR. He argued that employing criminal justice measures to intimidate individuals was unjustifiable. He highlighted the hypocrisy in the legal system, noting that many Members of Parliament (MPs) face serious criminal charges but are not subjected to similar scrutiny. Das questioned the logic behind criminalising the use of offensive language at protests when such expressions are part of everyday dialogue.

Das referred to the broader implications of targeting specific individuals, urging the government to reconsider its strategies. He reiterated that using state machinery to exact pressure on protesters is an abuse of power, and he called for an end to the harassment of young people. This emphasis on the need for balanced treatment is significant, especially in the context of ongoing student unrest.

The situation has generated considerable public discourse, prompting even Prime Minister Modi to comment on the matter. In a video shared on social media platform Instagram, the Prime Minister addressed the controversy surrounding the language used during the protests, recognising the public’s anger. Modi urged individuals to respond to provocations with guidance and understanding rather than punitive measures.

This call for a more constructive approach aligns with the sentiments expressed by various political figures and commentators who are advocating for the protection of dissenters’ rights. The challenge remains for the government to balance maintaining order while respecting the fundamental right to protest, especially as the atmosphere around student activism continues to evolve.
