The Congress party has launched a sharp critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government in connection with the alleged distribution of a question paper from a medical examination in Odisha. The party asserts that superficial measures such as harsher penalties and expedited courts are insufficient to address the deep-rooted issues of corruption and commercialisation in the education sector.

Jairam Ramesh, a prominent Congress leader, remarked that while the Prime Minister is reportedly engaged in improving his skills related to video content creation, his administration is enacting what he termed “eyewash legislation” with fast-track courts. This critique follows the recent emergence of information regarding another paper leak from Odisha, the home state of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Details of the Alleged Paper Leak

On July 27, during the ongoing postgraduate examination of Odisha University of Health Sciences, a question paper was allegedly circulated on WhatsApp. Officials reported a significant public outcry following this incident, especially amidst widespread concern over a recent leakage in the NEET examination. Ramesh highlighted that this incident reflects deeper problems in the education system.

Reports indicate that photographs of the examination paper were forwarded on a social media platform while the exam was in progress. Some participants also mentioned that answers were shared from certain numbers during this time. A student from a private medical college in Bhubaneswar brought the matter to light after allegedly receiving images from a WhatsApp group connected to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.

In response to these allegations, Vice-Chancellor Manas Ranjan Sahoo convened a virtual meeting with the heads of medical colleges where the postgraduate medical exams were taking place, aiming to enhance security for upcoming assessments. Officials are trying to ascertain the methods used to circulate the question paper images.

Institutional Reactions and Security Measures

Despite ongoing security protocols, Dalai expressed astonishment that such a breach had occurred, raising questions about the types of electronic devices that may have been employed to share images. An internal review is presently underway to investigate precisely how the circulation of the exam paper transpired, especially as the allegations have garnered political criticism and called for tighter security measures for future examinations.

The Congress party has reiterated its commitment to addressing issues of corruption in the educational landscape, emphasising the need for a comprehensive dialog on these pressing matters rather than merely implementing punitive measures. The implication is that without serious reform in how education is managed, incidents like this will continue to emerge.
