Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Sees Premium Ticket Prices in India, Touching ₹3,000 at Pune IMAX Theatres

The CSR Journal Magazine

Advance ticket sales for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, The Odyssey, commenced in India at 10:00 am on June 8, well ahead of its release scheduled for July 21, 2023. So far, Universal Pictures has made arrangements for two screenings exclusively in IMAX theatres—one in the morning and a second in the evening. Initial expectations indicated that ticket prices might soar to unprecedented levels, possibly surpassing those of Nolan’s previous film, Oppenheimer, released earlier this year.

However, it has been observed that many IMAX cinemas are offering comparatively moderate ticket prices, revealing a mix of high and reasonable rates across different locations. This development has sparked interest among cinema-goers eager to experience the latest cinematic offering from the esteemed director.

Ticket Prices Across Major Cities

In Mumbai, the Inox Malad emerges as one of the more affordable options, with morning show tickets priced at Rs. 450, Rs. 470, and Rs. 520. The evening show at 5:00 pm sees ticket prices of Rs. 700, Rs. 750, and Rs. 800. Erox IMAX is charging Rs. 500, Rs. 520, and Rs. 550 for the 9:45 am show, while the 4:45 pm screening is priced at Rs. 700, Rs. 720, and Rs. 750.

At PVR Lower Parel, ticket prices are higher yet not the most expensive, with morning show tickets priced at Rs. 700, Rs. 800, and Rs. 1400. For the late-night show at 8:30 pm, audiences will pay Rs. 900, Rs. 1200, and Rs. 1400. Cinepolis cinemas reportedly command the highest prices, with Thane charging Rs. 950, Rs. 1000, and Rs. 1050 for the 7:00 am show, while the evening 5:30 pm show is priced significantly higher, at Rs. 1400, Rs. 1500, and Rs. 1600.

In the Delhi-NCR region, ticket prices are also varied. Notably, PVR Vegas Dwarka lists prices for both shows at Rs. 830, Rs. 850, and Rs. 1050. In contrast, PVR Priya offers a more economical option with tickets priced at Rs. 450, Rs. 470, and Rs. 490, although recliners cost Rs. 1400. The pricing landscape continues with PVR Superplex Noida charging Rs. 640, Rs. 660, and Rs. 760 for afternoon slots and varying costs for night shows.

Regional Pricing Variations and Trends

Further south, the ticket pricing at Cinepolis Nexus in Bengaluru is set at Rs. 900, Rs. 950, and Rs. 1000 for both shows, while Cinepolis Kochi prices vary from Rs. 750 to Rs. 950. In Coimbatore, Broadway lists a flat ticket rate of Rs. 508.34. In Kolkata, Inox South City has set its morning show tickets at Rs. 470 and Rs. 500, with 8:30 pm show tickets priced at Rs. 680 and Rs. 710.

Surprisingly, Pune emerges as the city with the most expensive ticket options for The Odyssey. In Cinepolis Aundh and Inox Megaplex, morning show tickets range from Rs. 1400 to a staggering Rs. 2600, while evening screenings soar to Rs. 3000, signalling a notable trend of premium pricing in this locality.

As of 10:45 am on June 8, numerous IMAX locations, including Miraj IMAX Wadala in Mumbai and PVR Palazzo in Chennai, have yet to commence ticket bookings. Additionally, dynamic pricing strategies suggest that ticket prices may increase as demand rises closer to the release date.
