The death toll from the collapse of the waste-to-energy plant in Pune has now risen to eight, with ongoing efforts to locate one worker who is still unaccounted for nearly three days following the tragic incident. The accident took place on July 8 in the Moshi area, within the jurisdiction of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), while employees were present at the site.

Rescue teams reported that initially, 14 workers were successfully rescued alive from the debris. However, the situation escalated when another worker was found in critical condition, later passing away as a result of injuries sustained. Authorities are continuing their search efforts in hopes of discovering the remaining missing worker.

This extensive operation has involved multiple agencies including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Indian Army, and the local Fire Brigade, and continues to unfold without interruption for over 72 hours. One of the key difficulties faced by the rescue teams is the sheer volume of waste that has accumulated on the damaged building, posing risks for further collapses.

Commissioner Discusses Challenges of the Collapse

VN Suryawanshi, Commissioner of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, has elaborated on the circumstances surrounding the collapse. He noted that approximately 10 lakh metric tonnes of waste had applied significant pressure to the structure, making the rescue operations particularly precarious. The immediate challenge was to safely remove the waste and stabilize the building before sending in rescue personnel.

Commissioner Suryawanshi highlighted the importance of carefully dismantling unstable sections of the building in a controlled manner. He expressed concerns that any misstep during the operation could potentially lead to another collapse, jeopardising the safety of rescuers. Currently, priority is being given to ensuring the structure is stable before increasing the intensity of efforts to locate the final missing individual.

Heavy machinery, cranes, and specialised rescue tools have been deployed on-site, while teams are diligently searching through the rubble for any indications of the missing worker’s whereabouts. The situation remains dynamic as rescue efforts are underway, all while keeping safety measures at the forefront of the operation.
