Chief Minister Vijay Wins Floor Test as TVK Government Secures 144 Votes in Tamil Nadu Assembly

The CSR Journal Magazine

Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), successfully passed the floor test in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on May 13. The vote resulted in 144 MLAs supporting TVK, a significant show of confidence in the newly elected administration.

With the backing of allied parties, the TVK held a total of 120 MLAs in the Assembly. Notably, 22 MLAs voted against the party while five MLAs opted to abstain from the voting process. The Opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) staged a walkout, reducing the total participant count during the voting.

Vijay’s support base included Congress, CPI, CPI(M), and VCK, which contributed to the majority. Additionally, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), with its two MLAs, pledged its support, enhancing the TVK’s governmental stability.

Opposition’s Response and Allegations

In response to the floor test, DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin condemned the TVK’s tactics of garnering support from other parties. He expressed concerns over the future governance of Tamil Nadu, urging the new government to handle welfare schemes responsibly without politicising them.

AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami announced that all 47 MLAs from his party would oppose the TVK. He made allegations that several of his party members were being approached with offers of ministerial roles in exchange for their support, asserting that this practice undermines the integrity of the Assembly.

During the proceedings, former minister and AIADMK MLA SP Velumani made statements that were met with objections from fellow party members loyal to Palaniswami, highlighting internal divisions within the AIADMK. The atmosphere suggested a growing rift between factions within the party itself.

Composition of the Assembly and TVK Strength

Following recent developments, the TVK boasts a composition of 107 seats in the Assembly after CM Vijay’s decision to resign from Trichy East, opting to retain his position in Perambur. However, the party had 106 voting MLAs due to a court ruling that prevented TVK leader Srinivasa Sethupathi from participating in the confidence vote.

The coalition’s strength, currently at 120 seats, includes five Congress MLAs and additional contributions from CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML. This diverse coalition aims to stabilise the government as it navigates the complexities of governance in Tamil Nadu.

Despite the challenges, the TVK secured its position as a significant force in the legislative landscape, marking its transition away from traditional political binaries in Tamil Nadu, which have typically been dominated by DMK and AIADMK. This election cycle has established TVK as a formidable political entity.
