The Char Dham Yatra has been temporarily suspended by the Uttarakhand administration as a precautionary measure due to ongoing heavy rainfall. The decision was made on July 20, 2023, in response to warnings issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which included Red and Orange alerts. The administration cited a heightened risk of landslides across several pilgrimage routes, necessitating immediate action to ensure the safety of all pilgrims.

In an official directive, the Garhwal Commissioner instructed District Magistrates and relevant officials to ensure that pilgrims who are currently en route are safely accommodated. These officials have been tasked with allowing further travel only after the routes have been assessed and declared completely safe.

Safety concerns have prompted state authorities to prioritise communication with the public and pilgrims. They have been asked to disseminate accurate information regarding the situation through various media and communication channels. The administration reassured stakeholders that the suspension is purely a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding lives.

Weather Conditions and River Water Levels

Rudraprayag district has been experiencing continuous rainfall, which has resulted in a significant rise in the water levels of the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers, placing them near warning levels. Specifically, the Alaknanda is currently measured at 625.00 metres, while the Mandakini stands at 624.15 metres. The situation is worsening as the rivers approach critical thresholds that may affect surrounding areas and increase flood risks.

Reports indicate that Ghats developed under the Namami Gange project have started to submerge due to the rising water levels, further complicating the situation. Recent rainfall figures show that Rudraprayag received 22 mm, Ukhimath recorded 77 mm, and Jakholi documented 53 mm over the last 24 hours, illustrating the impact of the weather on local conditions.

Given the persistent rainfall and associated risks, the Rudraprayag district administration has put all departments on high alert. The issuance of continuous weather alerts has mandated that residents and visitors stay alert and exercise caution, particularly near riverbanks and areas prone to flooding.

Guidelines for Pilgrims and Residents

Authorities have advised pilgrims to remain calm and to refrain from spreading or heeding rumours. They are encouraged to follow only official advisories issued by the administration and heed the guidance provided by district authorities. The emphasis is on public safety during this period of heightened risk associated with weather conditions.

The District Emergency Operations Centre has also advised all relevant departments to maintain maximum readiness for any potential emergencies arising from the rain. Residents and pilgrims have been urged to avoid riverbanks and remain vigilant to adapt to the rapidly changing weather scenarios.

The Char Dham Yatra will resume once thorough assessments confirm that all pilgrimage routes are safe and the weather condition stabilises. The administration remains committed to prioritising public safety as the situation evolves in the region.
