CBSE Re-Evaluation Portal Goes Live After Delay, Faces 1.5 Million Cyber Hits in Minutes

The CSR Journal Magazine

On June 2, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) marked a significant day with the long-awaited launch of its re-evaluation and verification portal. Following a delay of over 75 hours from the anticipated May 29 opening, the portal was activated around 4 am. The board announced this development via a post on X, allowing students to request scanned copies of their answer sheets, verification of marks, and re-evaluations.

The launch provided much-needed relief to countless students and parents who had been anxiously awaiting the opportunity since the Class 12 results were released. The extended delay had led to widespread frustration, prompting CBSE to consistently reassure stakeholders that the portal would become available soon.

Cyberattacks and Technical Issues Arise

However, the relief was short-lived as shortly after the portal’s launch, CBSE reported significant cyber threats. The board disclosed that over one lakh attempts were made to gain unauthorised access to the newly opened system. A substantial denial-of-service (DoS) attack created approximately 1.5 million hits within a two-minute window, which raised concerns about the portal’s stability.

Despite the ongoing cyber pressure, technical teams were on standby throughout the day, working to ensure that legitimate users could still access the platform. The mix of attacks and ongoing technical challenges led to further complications for many users, adding to the day’s drama.

Students, undeterred by the cyber threats, continued to flood the portal. By 11 pm, CBSE officials reported that nearly 28,000 applications had been successfully submitted for various post-result services, following an initial wave of over 16,000 requests within the first few hours after launch. This surge of applications indicated both the high demand for answer-sheet access and the anxiety prevalent among students regarding their results.

Leadership Changes and Investigations Announced

Accompanying the leadership change, the government initiated an inquiry into the procurement of OSM services. This system has faced scrutiny in recent weeks, raising questions about the implementation of digital evaluation and student access to their answer sheets. The latest developments signify not just a technical issue but highlight broader concerns of administrative accountability.

By the end of June 2, CBSE navigated a day marked by the delayed rollout of the re-evaluation portal, an extensive cyberattack, and a significant overhaul in leadership, while processing nearly 28,000 applications. The day’s events underscored a pivotal moment in the board’s recent history, transitioning from technical challenges to critical scrutiny of its governance and operational effectiveness.
