CBSE Mandates May 31 Cut-Off for Schools to Finalise Class 6 Language Choices

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has set May 31, 2026 as the final deadline for all affiliated schools to finalise and upload their third language (R3) selection for Class 6, reinforcing its push towards multilingual education.

The directive follows an earlier circular issued on April 9, 2026, which outlined the framework for introducing a third language in line with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023. While several schools have already submitted their choices through the OASIS portal, the Board noted that some entries remain incomplete or do not comply with prescribed norms.

Final Window for Compliance

  • CBSE has termed this deadline a final opportunity for schools to ensure full compliance before the start of the 2026–27 academic session. Institutions failing to meet the deadline may face regulatory action, underlining the urgency of timely submissions.

  • The Board emphasised that the initiative is not merely procedural but aims to enhance the quality of education by ensuring students are exposed to diverse linguistic learning.

  • Guidelines on Language Selection and Study Material

According to CBSE guidelines:

Schools must follow the three-language formula, ensuring at least two Indian languages among R1, R2, and R3.
Textbooks for languages listed under the Eighth Schedule will be made available via CBSE and NCERT platforms by July 1, 2026.
For non-scheduled languages, schools may use SCERT or state-approved materials.

  • All content must align with learning outcomes defined under the NCF-SE 2023 to maintain uniform academic standards nationwide.

  • Alignment with National Education Goals

  • The directive reflects the broader vision of the National Education Policy 2020, which promotes multilingualism, cultural inclusivity, and cognitive development among students.

  • Schools that have not yet incorporated two Indian languages into their curriculum have been instructed to do so by July 1, 2026.

Monitoring and Support Mechanism

CBSE has directed its regional offices to closely monitor implementation and assist schools facing challenges. This support system aims to ensure a smooth transition as institutions adapt to the updated curriculum requirements.

With the May 31 deadline approaching, CBSE has urged schools to act swiftly. The introduction of a structured third language at the middle school level marks a significant step in reshaping India’s education system, encouraging linguistic diversity and holistic learning.
